The definitive list of Command-Tab keyboard shortcuts System
I decided to try all different sorts of keys and mouse movements with command-tab in Panther and I don't think that all of these shortcuts have been compiled here in one hint.

While holding the command key after hitting command-tab:
  • Shift forward through apps by pressing tab, or the right arrow.
  • Shift backwards through apps by pressing shift-tab, the left arrow, or the tilde (right above the tab key).
  • Directly target any app using the mouse.
  • The Home key targets the left-most (current) app.
  • The End key targets the right-most app.
  • Go to a targeted app by releasing the command key, clicking the mouse button, hitting the space bar, or hitting return.
  • Cancel app switching by pressing esc or the period
  • Press H to hide the targeted app.
  • Press Q to quit the targeted app.
[robg adds: Many of the above have been covered in various hints before, but there are a couple of new ones in this list, and I thought it made sense to have them all documented in one easy-to-find hint...]

This is probably due to the fact that the code which implements these features operates at a lower level than the rest of the OS. It seems to determine 'Q' and 'H' by the signals sent on the bus rather than their logical mappings via the keyboard layout. I'm assuming a french keyboard uses azerty layout, so the key which is labeled 'A' sends the same signal as they key labeled 'Q' on a qwerty keyboard. I noticed this issue myself because I use the dvorak layout, where q->' and h->d.

For those of us who want to quit all of our apps at the end of the day, I like this no fuss, no muss method, expanding on the original tip above.

Simply hit Command-Tab, let go of the Tab key (continue to hold down Command)(as noted above) and hit Q through the sequence of open apps--there's no need to wait to switch to each open app! Saves time versus the Cmd-Tab, Cmd-Q, Cmd-Tab, Cmd-Q, etc. multiple app shutdown method.

Also the mouse-wheel changes the active icon on the bar - great for super-quick switching.

I have always pressed "`" to scroll left through the open apps.

Awe crap, I missed the "tilde" in the first line of the original hint. So please disregard my response. Thanks.
