I just discovered that one may cut/copy/paste whole emails in Mail.app using the list view. For example, in order to make two copies of an email, highlight it, hit copy and then paste. Or one can also paste any letter into TextEdit.

yes, and drag & drop to other apps that use the textedit engine is possible, e.g. drag an eMail onto the description-area of ScriptEditor, even links survive.

I was only able to paste plain text messages, though http:// hyperlinks did work. Embedded images and such from HTML mail would not paste at all. Does anyone have a more comprehensive description of when this does and does not work?

You can also duplicate e-mails by pressing the option key while dragging. This works with files in the Finder too, and probably other apps as well.
