10.3: Easily drag from the desktop to a particular window Desktop
Something neat I discovered by accident regarding ExposÚ. If you want to drag a file from the desktop to a particular window, but like me, your desktop is filled with windows, here's one way to do it. First minimize the window that you want to drag to (using Command-M), then use ExposÚ to show the desktop (F11 by default). You can now maximize the window you shrunk into the dock, and you've got a clean workspace to work with.

[robg adds: For moving things from the desktop, I personally prefer the method discussed in this previous hint. However, if you have a lot of open windows, then this new hint will make it very easy to drag to the proper target.]

To drop a file in a particular window, I use Expose in 2 modes.

First I reveal the desktop (F11), then grab the file I want. Once I have it, I reveal all windows (F9). Then I just look for the window I want.

If you hold the file over the desired window for a second or two, it will automatically activate. Then I just drop the file into the window.

Seems to be faster, at least for me.

Remember that hitting the space bar brings an ExposÚd window to the front immediately. So you can make that window pop back out of ExposÚ even faster with a tap of your thumb.

this way is the best. i use it myself all day. like drop an attachment into mail etc. just keep in mind:
1. in panther windows pop to the front when dragging over them
2. a drag works before and after the use of expose

these combined do 90% of the typical situations.

Even slicker is to assign "show desktop" and "show all" to hot corners, then you just use the mouse in the drag and no keys. Slam the mouse to your "show desktop" corner, grab the file, slam the mouse to your "show all" corner, then hover over the window to drop on for a sec until it is selected, then drop. Press the spacebar as usual to select the window more quickly.
