10.3: Panther now supports right to left languages System
I know some people were complaining about how Jaguar only supported left to right languages. Well, Panther now supports right to left languages like Hebrew and Arabic in all Cocoa text views. To try this out go to the international preference pane in system preferences and click on the input menu tab. Click "Show input menu in menu bar" and add Hebrew or Arabic to the input menu. Then run TextEdit or compose a message in Mail. In the text field, control-click and select "Writing Direction -> Right to Left." It even knows to make numbers left to right. Pretty slick.

Some Cocoa programs seem to have a little problem with the cursor, but overall this works well. In fact, I'm using TextEdit for mixed English and Arabic text in my current studies without any problem. I also just used OmniGraffle to make bilingual business cards. Note, though, this doesn't work at all for Carbon apps (or at least none of the ones that I've tried).

No, it wouldn't work for Carbon apps. They use a different text engine.

Right-to-left support has been in OS X since Jaguar. Apple has done a lot to improve it though. I'm glad they listened.
