MP3 sounds in Mail may cause system-related sound issues Apps
I was looking to expand on Mail's sound effects, so I got some new MP3 sounds, saved them in ~/Library/Sounds and tried to use them in Mail. Mail accepts them, and plays a sample.

Later I noticed that the sounds don't play, and all system sounds are "damaged." The only thing you hear is a loud and nasty noise for every sound if Mail is running.

I re-saved the MP3s in AIFF format, and removed the MP3s from Mail's sound listing ... and now everything works correctly again.

[robg adds: I haven't confirmed this one but thought it was worth a heads-up.]

Thanks; I was having the same problem with WAV files as mail sounds and couldn't figure it out. Converting to AIFF solves the problem.

BTW, here is a great little utility for doing the conversion:

MP3 sounds in Mail may cause system-related sound issues

After my upgrade to Panther, all my system sounds included a buzzing sound.

while i was sys prefs choosing a new alert sound, thinking the one that i had chosen was just damaged, i turned the sound all the way down with the slider, and when i turned it back up, no more buzz.

i have no idea what was going on.

This problem will keep rearing its head. I have the had the same thing happen to my system sounds - turning into a buzzing noise and the old slider trick fixes it temporarily. Also Mail will stop playing any sounds after a small amount of time. This only seems to happen if you select to change Mails incoming mail sound.
I have all new sounds that I added to /Users/me/Library/Sounds in AIFF format but this changes nothing it seems.

I have been seeing this also since moving from Jaguar to Panther - but it occurs for me with any customized sounds in AIF format. I don;t get the buzzing sound but I do get truncated sounds, especially from ichat and mail.

Yes I can confirm this totally odd behavior with the Mail.app program in Panther. The buzzing sound was at max volume, and I got some evil stares from the cat. The buzzing goes away if you set the alerts volume all the way to zero, then move the slider back again to a normal setting, and proper operation is temporarily restored.

Mail.app has another problem too - is you have over 1.6Gb of mailboxes, do not turn on threaded view. You will BBOD and have to reboot.
