Customizable Mozilla/Firebird user agent spoofing Web Browsers
If you're looking for customisable user agent spoofing, then Mozilla/Firebird makes it easy. You can get the Mozilla/Firebird plugin here; don't be fooled by the Windows screenshot -- XUL is cross platform, remember.

I can confirm the Firebird plugin works fine with Firebird 0.7 on Panther. So, what user agent to masquerade as? Here's a pretty comprehensive list to get you started...

People - people - people.

This is a good hint and all, and could be very useful for those having trouble with some websites. However, you do more damage by doing this.

These hints are for the lazy. What I mean is, if your bank site (as only 1 or a gazillion examples) is not compatible with your Mac you could use this to fool it. Easy for you, easy for them - damaging to the Mac.

We are lazy by nature and you will not take the time to email or phone the offending website and *censored* your ass off that you are descriminated against.

Let them know they need to support Macs. If you simply fool them you aren't helping. They go on looking at their reports showing 99.9% of users are on Windows so why would they ever take time to make it work on ANY other platform.

These "checks" written in to websites are stupid in my opinion. Why is it that in most cases (not all) I can fake it into thinking I am a Windows box and the site runs perfect in Safari? Make them make it work from the start.

Soory - bit of a rant there, but be aware of what you are doing below the surface.

I second this. When you change what you report to websites, then they don't know that people with other browsers use their sites.!!! We need people to know that there are other browsers than IE!. You can change your user agent in Safari as well as in Opera and some other browsers.... I just don't agree with ever doing it.

but the beauty of a customisable user agent string is that you can configure it enough to get your browser authorised and then append any message you like to the string to let the webmasters know what you think of their site ;-)
