10.3: Use Exposť to line up open application windows Apps
If you use the Applications Windows setting in Exposť (F10 by default), and all your windows are the same height and in the same vertical position, Exposť will shrink all the windows into a straight horizontal line across the screen. If the windows vary, of course, it places them in the familiar 'all over the place' configuration.

To see an example of this, open Word and press Command-N a few times, then hit F10. Exposť will send your windows flying ... but now (after hitting F10 again) click on each window's green "+" button, so they all move to the same vertical position, and try F10 again. You should see a nice neat line across your screen. I'm not sure this is a hint, but I've found it useful with graphics applications to line up a collection of open images.

The windows do not necessarily have to be in the same vertical position, nor the exact same size. The trick apparently is if the windows are the same height.

I'm not so sure it has to do with height, or width for that matter. I opened several terminal windows (9, then 16, then 25) all of the same height and width. Sometimes Expose would line them up pretty close to perfectly, other times I got the random jumble.

i actually think this is an exposť bug

Agreed: bug.

With a bunch of open word documents (feedback for some students) the line took up maybe 1/4-1/3 of the screen, and the shrunken documents overlapped (despite the available screen space); it's hard to imagine a less-useful scenario. Strikes me that it's probably a degenerate case in the algorithm they're using for exposť.

Surely the tip is how to prevent this

This behaviour came up in a thread over at the MacNN forums. In this case a user wanted to prevent this occurring in Safari. This can be easily achieved by leaving the downloads window open.

It seems as though the determining factor is the positions of the tops of windows. So if all your windows are up against the menu bar (like they often are in Safari) then this will occur. Clicking '+' on all your Word windows will align their tops too.

I agree that this is a quirk of the exposť algorithm. To call it a full-blown bug is a little strong.

I'm pretty positive that the two requirements are only the height of the windows in question (that is, all identical) and then also to have them all at the same vertical offset. That is, they must all have their tops and bottoms lined up.

Is there any possibility to change the algorithm that expose uses? Would be nice to be able to choose from different tiling strategies. If you have more than 10 windows open it can get quite confusing. One could for example always put the "oldest" windows (least used) lower than the newer ones.

Well, anybody?

BTW, you don't have to click on all the windows. You can Zoom All by holding the Option key when you click on the + or selecting it in the Window menu.
