Auto complete text works fine with Option-Escape (see this hint), presenting a very long list of words with a scrollbar, ready to get selected. But auto complete text also works with the contextual menus; just click the right mouse button (or Control-click for single button mice) on the word to complete it. The whole word gets selected and a contextual menu opens with only a few words at the top of the menu (along with other usual stuff). Very fast access on a smaller (smarter? more likely?) list of suggestions.

But if you type tes and control-click, you'll get a short list of possible words. The Option-escape method does work with entire words; option-escaping on test gives you a long list of possible longer words...]
