There are problems printing with Panther to legacy LPD servers, but these problems can be worked around easily... if you know how!
I was trying to print to an old NeXT printer on a NeXT workstation. This worked great with Jaguar, but Panther makes a configuration change to the Mac OS X CUPS printing engine that stops it from working in the default configuration.
The fix is simple, see this page for instructions.
[robg adds: See the web page for the full story and much more detail on the steps involved, but in case that page ever vanishes, the essence of the change lies in adding ?reserve=yes to the end of the printer's URL string.]
