10.3: Browse and filter all logs with Console.app Apps
The Console application (in /Applications -> Utilities) has been greatly improved in Panther. There is now a toolbar with Clear, Reload, and best of all, a Filter field, so you can focus on specific issues. Click on the Logs toolbar item, and a sidebar opens, containing a hierarchal view of common log directories and their contents.

Here's a little trick to make Console even more useful. I just made some symbolic links (ln -s) from the log directories of other software I use (like TomCat and Cocoon) to my ~/Library/Logs directory, and they appear in Console.app's sidebar, ready for browsing. You must use symbolic links, as Finder aliases do not work.

You can even define your own set of directories, i.e.
defaults write com.apple.Console LogFolderPaths -array '~/Library/Logs/' '/Library/Logs/' '/var/log/' '/opt/local/var/log/'
in order to add /opt/local/var/log.
