Copy TiVo'ed shows to DVD using OS X and Toast 6 Apps
This is a niche one, but what the heck! If you have a TiVo and a Mac with a Superdrive, you can lay off your shows to DVD instead of VHS.

Simply get yourself an analogue-to-DVD converter (Canopus makes some internal and external solutions) and run the Video Out of the TiVo into the converter. Good news here: The TiVo includes two Video Out ports, so you can still have a VCR hooked up, etc.

Then, hook the converter into a FireWire port of your Mac, and start up Toast 6 to make use of the new "Plug & Burn" feature. Select the DVD-Video option, and you should see the converter ... then just click "Import and Burn!" Or, set a timer: You can have Toast finish burning after 1 minute, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc.

This is one of the reasons I want a tivo so bad.

All though I think this is a far more elegant solution and the result would look quite a bit nicer as it would not require resampling of the data. This requires a tivo with the home media option.

Or try a ReplayTV

ReplayTV's video files are easily extracted with DVArchive (http://dvarchive.sourceforge.net/) and then processed with Replay Tools (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=53560a106465b525d63eb25ddd77c2f7&threadid=314017&perpage=20&highlight=toolkit&pagenumber=1).

Then drop into Toast 6 and burn! No Home Media kit required.

A great resource for ReplayTV and Mac compatibility is MacReplayTV forums: http://www.designwork.net/macreplaytv/index.php

Have fun!

I have to agree on the ReplayTV. TiVo has the better marketing and the household name but the ReplayTV is a superior product. DVArchive is fantastic open source - allows me to use my Blue & White as a 2nd Replay, I can watch shows live streaming (through Quicktime) over Airport no problem, move shows to take on a flight (normal MPEG-2 natively) ... and best of all, you don't get soaked for "media capabilities" from Replay like TiVo does to you. You shouldn't pay money to use features of your device, that's silly. TiVo still doesn't come with Ethernet - you need a USB dongle. What is that? How 2001 PC Laptop is that?

I love my ReplayTV 5000 series... get a small one (40 hr), put a big HD in your G3/G4 tower on the same network - and have tons more Replay storage. Burn to VCD, DVD, whatever you like - no hardware or conversions necessary.
