10.3: Active Exposť disables screensaver and display sleep Desktop

For Macs configured to activate Exposť with a desktop hot corner, it is possible to leave the "exploded" Exposť view open indefinitely. It turns out that this behavior overrides both screen saver and display sleep settings. I realized this today when I got up from my Mac, absent-mindedly left the mouse cursor in the corner -- activating Exposť -- and then leaving to run some errands. When I came back an hour later the screen was exactly as I left it, but the screen saver should have come on within five minutes, and the display should have been put to sleep within ten.

I've duplicated this behavior with both "all windows" and "all application windows," and got the same result either way. Whether or not this qualifies as a bug is a matter of opinion, but it was certainly not the behavior I was expecting. Those that count on things like screen saver passwords for security and a powered-down screen for battery life or general power conservation should be aware of this side effect of Exposť activation.

I was unable to duplicate this behavior. With Expose activated via a hot corner and multiple windows open, the screensaver came on at the appointed time.

I can confirm that screen saver and Energy settings still work.

Err, I submitted this hint a while ago -- back in October maybe? Rob wrote to me saying he couldn't reproduce the error in 10.3.1, and after running the update, I wasn't able to either. I think -- it's been a while at this point, and I forget the details (and my main machine just crashed, so I can't look up my old mails...).

In any case, I think this may have been a bug in 10.3.0, but chances are it's not happening any more in more recent revisions.

I'm not quite sure why this story finally got published now; as I say, it was submitted quite a while ago at this point, and even I (as the story submitter) am not sure it's relevant any more.

DVD Player

If you have a mac that has a DVD drive in it, try playing a DVD. From what I have seen, it does not disable screen dimming (on my 12" powerbook), but it does stop my computer from going to sleep or turning off the screen. It's really nice, I remember in Jaguar where I had to instinctivly move the mouse every minute in order to prevent my laptop, in incredibly low-power mode, from shutting off the screen.

It seems that this is more of a hidden apple-only secret, because in Panther, Salling Clicker cannot do this, like it did in Jaguar. But, Salling Clicker didn't really prevent the screensaver, it actually would turn it off when you came within range of the computer (it's really nice).
