10.3: Create a minimal font panel Apps
As you change the size of Cocoa's Font Panel, it is 'smart' about how much information it displays. At its smallest, the panel reduces to just three pop-up menus as seen at left -- Family, Typeface, and Size. This makes for a terrific 'lightweight' font panel for most situations.

Panther now also includes a "live" Search field in the font panel so, if you have lots of fonts, you can filter the list to make an easier choice with less scrolling (though you'll have to make the font panel larger to see the Search box).

I'm not at my Mac right now to confirm, but I seem to recall being able to 'smart-shrink' the Font window in Jaguar.

Not new -- one can create exactly the same "minimal font panel" in 10.2.x as well.

You also don't have to have the expanded window to search for font names. Just single-click to drop down the font menu and start typing the name.
