10.3: Create hyperlinks in TextEdit documents via iChat

I'm not sure if this was available in Jaguar, but in Panther RTF documents in TextEdit are able to contain clickable hyperlinks, though there seems to be no way to create them from within that application. So how do you add hyperlinks to TextEdit documents? Easy, with iChat:

  1. Open iChat (no need to be logged in)
  2. From the File menu, select 'New Chat'
  3. Type a description for your link in the window that opens
  4. From the Edit menu, select 'Select All' and then 'Add Hyperlink...'
  5. Type the URL for your link in the sheet that opens and click OK
  6. Cut and paste the link in an RTF TextEdit document
Et voilĂ ! :)

You can then change the style of the link to mimic that of the rest of the document by selecting other text in the document and doing Option-Command-C to copy its style, and then selecting the link and doing Option-Command-V to change the style of the link to that of the previously selected text.

[robg adds: This was mentioned in the comments to Paste web content with links from Safari to TextEdit, but I felt it merited its own hint...]
