10.3: Place desktop printers in the sidebar for fast access Desktop
Just when I thought it wouldn't get any cooler...

I dragged the icon of my desktop printer to the sidebar. Now I can have multiple windows/apps open, and still browse the finder for files to print. Just drag and drop the print file icon over the printer icon in the sidebar.

I like to have the printer in my dock, so I did a "show original" on the desktop printer alias, then dragged the original to the dock. Then I could delete the desktop alias. I like my desktop clean...

When I think of "sidebar", I immediately think "left" or "right".

Is that really the official term in Jaguar, the "sidebar"?

You can't do this in 10.2.8, since 10.2.8's Finder windows don't have sidebars. You can put desktop printer icons into the Dock, however, as someone points out above.

Yes, "sidebar" is Apple's official term. Look under the Finder's "File" menu, where you'll see the command "Add to Sidebar". Since the word "sidebar" makes you think "left" or "right", and the sidebar is on the left, how does that differ from what you were thinking about the term? Possibly you wanted the option to be able to place the sidebar on the right. That would be nice, I suppose, simply because it would be another option--maybe lefties would prefer it. Apple's Mail app puts its sidebar on the right, so why not¿

Any way to remove the sidebar completely?

Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the sidebar completely (other than doing it manually every time one appears)? For me, the way the sidebar works is counterintuitive, and I would be much happier without it.
