10.3: Use Preview to create highlighted text images Apps
If you have a section of a document you want to use as a graphic and would like to "highlight" a portion of the text, as seen at right, simply:
  1. Open the document in Preview (using Print -> Preview or other methods).
  2. Use Preview's new Select Tool (Tools -> Select Tool, or just Command-3) to select the portion of text you want to illustrat.
  3. Zoom the selected portion to fill the window using View -> Zoom to Selection (or just hit Shift-Command*) .
  4. Again use the Select Tool to select the portion of text to highlight, and the surrounding text will slightly grayed out, highlighting the desired text as seen in the screenshot.
  5. Use screen capture's Command-Shift-f4 to capture the window contents to a file or add the Control key to the mix to capture it to the clipboard.
This is useful for annotating documents on the web, or for use in keynote/powerpoint presentations.

10.3: Use Preview to create highlighted text images

EXCELLENT Tip! I actually wrote to apple asking for exactly that feature.

Depending on what you're doing, I've also found that creating shapes with 10% transparency (ie: almost completely see through) and a 1 pixel border of the same color and 80% transparency works really well.

If you're doing this a lot, you might like to use a customized color profile in the colors chooser. (I'll start a new thread to explain how to do that, look for "customizing color pallets")
