10.3: New contextual menus available in Address Book Apps
I have noticed some new Address Book features that I don't think were available in Jaguar (at least, some of them). The new items are accessed by clicking on the heading title (home, work, etc.) in the address card itself. The new options (some were available in Jaguar, but not all) I have found so far:

Click on phone number field header

  • Large Type
Click on email field header
  • Send email
  • iChat (disabled)
  • Visit home page (disabled)
  • Open iDisk (disabled)
  • Send update... (send new updated adress book card)
Click on homepage field header
  • Go to Web Site
Click on Instant Messenger field header
  • iChat
Click on address field header
  • Map of
  • Copy mailing label
  • Copy URL of map
[robg adds: While some of these were available in Jaguar, many are new with Panther and quite welcome -- the copy map URL, for one, saves me a trip to the browser to email a map link to someone!]

iChat is enabled if the person is online. And if they're online, you'll also see a green dot next to their picture.

Nice contextual menus, but not very usefull if they are not working. Can somebody acually get to a map of a place outside of the us ?
It does not matter to what i set the Country field in Address Book, the url opened by the map related menu items open with 'map.adp?country=us&address=...' in the location bar. The rest of the address data is correct, and when i change the 'us' to 'be' (belgium) the correct map shows up.
anyone else noticing the same ?
any workarounds ?

Mine works OK (in the UK) - and it pastes OK to the clipboard. Have you set Preferences|General to your country? Maybe that may have an effect.

Bluetooth cellphones

Also, if you have a paired Bluetooth cellphone, the address book context menu allows you to dial the number or send an SMS directly from the computer.

Is there a way to add functionality to these menus? Link them to AppleScripts? What I'd like to do is have the phone number pop-up menu dail the number on my modem, so I just have to pick up the nearby phone when the call connects.

There is actually. 10.3 brings an additions to the Address Book API called Address Book Action Plug-ins. From the developer site (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/ReleaseNotes/AppleApplications/AddressBook.html):

This API allows developers to populate AddressBook.app's roll-over menus with custom entries.

<snip/>

Action Plug-Ins can also be written in AppleScript

This sample AppleScript based action plug-in displays a person's age

using terms from application "Address Book"
    on action property
        return "birth date"
    end action property

    on action title for p with e
        return (((year of (current date)) - (year of e)) as string) & " years old"
    end action title

    on should enable action for p with e
        return true
    end should enable action

    on perform action for p with e
        display dialog (name of p & " is " & ((year of (current date)) - (year of e)) as string) & " years old"
        return true
    end perform action
end using terms from

Action plugins are stored in ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins or /Library/Address Book Plug-Ins

I wish it could do more than just add contextual menus. I really want to share address books in my office via Rendezvous. It'd be nice if I could write a plug-in for this.

It's probably already been discovered but Address-o-Sync will sync address books via Rendezvous without .Mac. http://www.slamslash.com/address-o-sync
