Drag Photoshop Layers into Finder windows Apps
I just discovered this one accidentally, in OSX 10.2.8: if you drag a layer from a Photoshop 7.0 image into a Finder window, you get a "Picture clipping.pictClipping" file that contains the image in that layer. You can drag a layer from the Layers palette or, if you have the Move [v] tool enabled, you can drag the layer right out of the image into a Finder window.

BTW, I tried dragging layers onto the Preview app in the Dock, or onto my icon in iChat -- no go. But I bet there are other places on our Macs that we could drag a Photoshop layer into.

[robg adds: This works in Panther and Photoshop Elements, too, though I had to drag it from the image itself, not the layers palette.]

Cool!

You can then drag the picture clipping into a Photoshop document as a new layer (with transparency preserved). This would come in handy if you needed a quick way to transfer the content of just one layer from one mac to another. You don't have to mess with putting the layer in its own document and saving it as a separate file.

Or... you could use this method to quickly create temporary back-ups of individual layers before experimenting with manipulating it beyond the limits of your history steps.

Note: Dragging a shape layer out to the finder rasterizes it.

This has been a feature in Photoshop since about version 5.

You can also drag layers from one Photoshop document to another.

I was hoping that it would work in illustrator but it dosen't.
You can, however, select certain elements in illustrator and drag them to the desktop.

Using Panther 10.3.9, but still using Photoshop 7, I find that dragging from the Layers palette no longer works, with or without the Move tool. I can, however, still use the Move tool to drag a layer from the image itself into a Finder window. Press 'v' to get the Move tool.

Meanwhile, I tried dragging directly into Final Cut Pro. Nope.
