Another means of capturing DVD screenshots Apps
Apple does not allow you to take a screenshot of a DVD while its playing. To get around this, you can do this:
  1. Insert the DVD.
  2. Quit the DVD player when it starts initially.
  3. Open up the DVD player again, and right after you double click it, press Command-Shift-4. After you do this, DO NOT click your mouse. Doing so will cause a screen shot to occur ... you only get one, so use it wisely.
  4. Press Control-C to get rid of the controller over the window. If need be, press command-0 to fill the screen with the DVD.
  5. Go to the place in the DVD where you want to get your screen shot. Then press the space bar ONCE; this will cause the crosshairs to turn into a camera which will take a full screen picture.
  6. Click the mouse and you got your pic (find it on the Desktop). You can turn it into a beautiful desktop pic with a nice high resolution graphic.
[robg adds: When I tried this method using the space bar, I got a blank full screen ... but if I just dragged a region (click and drag the mouse) and clicked, then it worked. I'm also not sure how you can set where in the movie you'll take your screengrab, as once you hit Shift-Command-4, you can't control the movie playback at all. I had to run DVD Player once, position the movie on the right frame, pause playback, and then quit DVD Player and re-launch while activating Shift-Colmmand-4. For this to work, make sure the Preferences are set to resume playback where it left off without asking. A previous hint described how to use Ambrosia's Snapz Pro X to take a DVD screengrab. However, I think both these methods will only work on NVidia machines; I don't have an ATI-equipped machine available to test with, though.]

Or, you can just type
screencapture -c
in the terminal. This will copy your screen to the clipboard as many times as you like, while a DVD is playing.

Just use VLC!

Download the free, opensource app VLC (available at versiontracker) and there will be no limitations on screenshots with full playback capability. VLC has a lot of other geeky capabilities giving you access to items not normally available in a consumer oriented package like Apple's DVD player.

Just use VLC!

VLC is very, very squirrly when it comes to stepping to the frame you want, and if you overshoot and hit left-arrow to back up (as you can in Apple's DVD Player) it takes you to the previous chapter.

I added this to VLC's bug database awhile ago, and the developers replied they have been working on it with little success.

weird: I tried using the terminal command, which does override the disabled command-shift-4 when dvd player is running. but when i took a shot of the dvd window, and opened it in preview, it wasn't just blank - it was see through! if i drag the preview window over the paused dvd window, i see the dvd screen through the screen shot of the dvd screen!

I was offered a penny for my thoughts, so I gave my two cents... I got ripped off.

Versiontracker is slowest site I have ever seen!

Macupdate.com is so much faster, has free registration and much more responsive with replies and updates. Versiontracker has gone downhill ever since they started charging for "Pro"..
Just wanted to mention that there were better alternatives.

SnapzPro

In addition to any Nvidia card, SnapzPro will let you take a DVD screenshot with any ATI card that supports Quartz Extreme. There may be exceptions, so check Ambrosia's site, but I can confirm it works with whatever Radeon card that comes with the 1GHz TiBook.

I agree ... I tried to use VLC to capture some screens and it is VERY buggy! I tried to go back several versions of VLC, because it used to be better about stepping through a movie, but they don't seem to work well with Panther.

I wonder why Apple won't let us take screen captures of DVD's? My (cough) Windows friends can do this plus quite a bit more with their DVD players.
