Use iTunes new error correction to fix skips on rips Apps
Not much of a hint, but an unannounced feature in the new iTunes 4.1 makes it a worthwhile upgrade.

In the Importing tab of Preferences, "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs" should produce rips with fewer skips from scratched CDs. A handy alternative to the Unix tools out there for "safe" ripping.

There are many variables in play, so YMMV.

Use iTunes new error correction to fix skips on rips

I've tried this, but I still have all sorts of problems getting clean rips.

Of course, this could be just bad CD's or the fact that a 333 MHz G3 doesn't like keeping up with iTunes ripping under OS X.

Any thoughts?

How about slowing down the disc instead?

I wish they had made iTunes smart enough to not blindly try to rip unbalanced discs at the fastest speed possible, resulting in constant skips in the file.

Is there a way to tell it to slow down, or does this feature fix that?

Haven't specifically tested the error correction feature... But I found that in general when copying the files directly from the CD in the finder my built in Sony CDRW always tries to copy at full speed... One of my really scratched CDs causes the Finder to 'grind' the CD drive trying to keep reading the same scratched portion over and over, but my external Lite-On DVD-ROM miraculously spins down the drive speed (you can hear it and see the speed drop) for this and provides click-free rips.
