10.3: Place apps in the Finder sidebar for fast launching Desktop
You can drop application into the Finder's sidebar, for one-click application launching.

[robg adds: Seems obvious, but I hadn't even thought to try it, so I figure there are others in the same boat!]

Please tell me you're joking.

If you aren't, open a Finder window. If it doesn't look different to you, go up to the menu and choose "Show Toolbar". (I'm typing this on a Linux box, so I'm not positive that's the wording.) You'll get a very useful sidebar on your Finder window. Explore. Enjoy!

no, I wasn't joking. But now, thank you, I know what is meant.

I thought of something like the Dock, but let that be ok now.

You also can add Documents to that Sidebar, opening them in the selected Program on one-click. ;-)

This replaces the Favorites short cut.

While Favorites still exists, the Favorites short cut (command-T) now puts files in the side bar.

Which is how I knew you could put apps in the side bar...

:-)
