10.3: Faster force quit and Logout options System
Two quickie keyboard shortcuts:
  • Command-Option-Shift-Esc: Force quits the frontmost application without asking or showing a dialog.
  • Command-Option-Shift-Q: Immediately log out the current user.
[robg adds: This hint is a reminder that you can often find interesting "undocumented" keyboard shortcuts while pressing the various modifier keys with the menus open -- you'll see the command names change if you've found a "new" shortcut. Please don't submit additional hints on all the "modified" shortcuts :)]

Some brief testing on my system has indicated that having Unsanity's FruitMenu (the Panther-compatible beta, at least) disables this functionality, even if you have the 'Force Quit' menu option on there. Any contrary experience?

Correct. Having Fruitmenu installed seems to disable this for some reason. Not sure why, but Fruitmenu users (like us) should file a bug report with Unsanity.

These seem really dangerous! Is there some way (other than Fruit Menu) of disabling them?

if you open the apple menu and push option and/or shift, you'll see the keyboard shortcuts and menu times change dynamically (just like the finder) to show what the new shortcuts will do.

The 'immediate log out' keys work in Jaguar as well, I have often used them to recover from a crashed full screen app (all right, game). dD

We are aware of the problem and it will be corrected in the FruitMenu update coming out sometime this week, hopefully. Keep an eye on www.unsanity.org =)

I noticed the day of release (I always play with new toys!) that this does not seem to work in Carbon Apps (the instant-kill one). Specifically, iTunes, Quicktime Player, and Word are not affected, while all Cocoa apps are.

This doesn't seem to work for me anymore. (10.4.3) The shift key still dynamically changes the selection in the Apple menu, to "Force Quit Safari" for instance, but the shortcut doesn't actually do anything. All my other keyboard shortcuts still work.

Does anyone have the same problem, or know what's wrong? I want to find out if it's just me before I file a bug!

Yes, I have the same problem. Command-Options-Shift-Esc doesn't do anything but modify the menu item (well, that's just shift all by itself).

I filed a bug with Apple on this, and they told me to try holding down Cmd-Option-Shift-Esc for 5 seconds, and it works. (10.4.4)
