10.3: Repair X11 after an archive and install Apps
A short hint for those who were using Apple's X11 Beta before installing the Panther X11 version, but now find their X11 installation somehow broken.

If you choose the "Archive and Install" method to upgrade your Jaguar system, and select X11 at the same time, the Installer _will_ archive and upgrade the X11R6 folder within /usr, but _will_not_ archive and install the X11.app within /Applications.

You'll see this to be true if, after your install, the X11.app is _still_ in /Applications instead of /Applications -> Utilities, which is it's new location.

Simple fix: Remove the /Applications/X11.app program yourself, and run the X11 installer from Disk 3 of the Panther install CDs.

Another option which worked for me was simply to trash the plist file (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.x11.plist).

YMMV.

That worked for me! I'd tried deleting/re-installing and was just drawing blanks. Thank you for posting your comment! How odd that this plist file would cause problems. It's contents seem very innocuous.

X11 Forwarding from Jaguar no longer works right
Authored by: ghf on Oct 30, '03 05:03:03AM

My X11 installation is 'somehow broken' too. But I did a clean install and then installed the final X11 just released. So following this hint won't work for me.

I find that the X11 forwarding that I used in Jaguar no longer works in Panther. When I begin a desktop session on my Mandrake Linux machine, forwarding the display to my Powerbook, the desktop boots up ok, but then no mouse-clicks register in the individual app windows. Bizarrely, this problem does not affect the Linux Panel (the "Start Button"/Dock equivalent). This leaves me in the tantalising situation where I can start up, say, Konqueror from the Panel using my mouse, and then find that I cannot access any of the controls within it. The mouse simply does not click through to the desktop.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

X11 Forwarding from Jaguar no longer works right
Authored by: Ross Beveridge on Nov 26, '03 05:05:39PM

I have a similar experience. Through all versions of OS 10.2 ssh with X11 forwarding worked fine. I now consistently get:

Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

messages when making ssh -X connections to either Linux or Solaris machines. Notably, exactly the same machines to which such connections worked properly before installing panther with the install archive option. I have reinstalled the most recent verion of X11 from the apple site, and also edited ssh_config and sshd_config to include

ForwardX11 yes

I am running out of ideas. Anyone out there found the fix?

For others having the above problem, I have found a weak work around that is simple. Under X11 preferences, under security, disable (uncheck) both 'Authenticate connections' and 'Allow connections from network clients'. This is not ideal, since it represents a less secure mode of operation, but it at least fixes the immediate problem and allows remote connections through 'ssh -X'.

I'm having the same problem. I know it was a while ago, but did you find a solution?

Thanks,
