I select some text in Safari. I click and hold until it becomes draggable. Now I hit F9. All of the windows shrink. When I place the cursor over the desired TextEdit window, the cursor becomes a white circle with slash, indicating that I can't drop there. However, a moment later Exposé brings that window to the foreground and I am able to drop my text. Elegant!

Nice :)

Better still - press the spacebar to bring the chosen window to the front immediately, just like it always used to be with popup folders.

spring-loaded folders I mean.
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
If you have hot corners active, you can drag and drop without going to the keyboard at all
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
Yes, I found this a very handy tip. You can use any Expose effect, including (which I just made use of) showing the desktop, clicking an icon, then re-hiding and dragging to appropriate app.
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
Of course, you likely could accomplish the same thing with less time and less mousing around by first highlighting the text to be copied, then selecting "New Window Containing Selection" under "TextEdit" in the Services submenu of the application's menu (such as Safari).
And, in Jaguar, exactly the same thing could be accomplished by selecting "Open Selection" under "TextEdit" in the Services submenu.
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
I guess you didn't get the full scope of the hint. If I want to drag text from one document to another, and the windows are overlapping too much, Expose will allow me to copy the text from one document and insert it /anywhere I want into the other document./ I think that's what the hint is trying to get at.
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
I thought this wasn't working, but the document is behind a blank document that TextEdit opens by default.
10.3: Drag and drop text clippings with Exposé
This works, or at least seems to work, with any item or object that's normally drag-and-droppable. I do this with Finder windows and Transmit windows, for FTP operations, all the time now. :-) |
