10.3: Use custom install options to conserve disk space Install
I'm surprised this wasn't submitted sooner. With today's 40+ GB hard drives, this doesn't matter to everyone, but this hint is useful if you like a clean system, with as few unnecessary files as possible, and want to conserve space on smaller hard drives.

Upon installation, the installer declares you need 3 GB to install when you click on a hard drive. 3 GB is what will be needed for a new clean install. However, if you click on the "Customize" button, you'll find options for the applications, language support, print drivers, etc. By de-selecting foreign language support files, and all the printer drivers, I was able to nearly cut the install size nearly in half, to 1.6 GB, also making it install faster!

This is true of every installer, but I was surprised at how much space was saved, and its a good reminder at every new major upgrade.

This script will remove the languages from your system if you already installed and realize your mistake now:

sudo find -x / \! \( -path 'dev*' \) \( -path '*Japanese.lproj' -o -path '*Spanish.lproj' -o -path '*Portuguese.lproj' -o -path '*German.lproj' -o -path '*Italian.lproj' -o -path '*French.lproj' -o -path '*Norwegian.lproj' -o -path '*Dutch.lproj' -o -path '*Finnish.lproj' -o -path '*Korean.lproj' -o -path '*Danish.lproj' -o -path '*Swedish.lproj' -o -path '*Icelandic.lproj' -o -path '*de.lproj' -o -path '*en_GB.lproj' -o -path '*en_AU.lproj' -o -path '*es.lproj' -o -path '*fr.lproj' -o -path '*it.lproj' -o -path '*ja.lproj' -o -path '*nl.lproj' -o -path '*da.lproj' -o -path '*fi.lproj' -o -path '*ko.lproj' -o -path '*ni.lproj' -o -path '*no.lproj' -o -path'*pt.lproj' -o -path '*zh_CN.lproj' -o -path '*zh_TW.lproj' -o -path '*ca.lproj' -o -path '*cs.lproj' -o -path '*el.lproj' -o -path '*eu.lproj' -o -path '*fr_CA.lproj' -o -path '*hu.lproj' -o -path '*id.lproj' -o -path '*pl.lproj' -o -path '*pt_BR.lproj' -o -path '*ru.lproj' -o -path '*sk.lproj' -o -path '*sl.lproj' -o -path '*sw.lproj' -o -path '*th.lproj' -o -path '*tr.lproj' -o -path '*sv.lproj' \) -type d -exec rm -R \{\} \; >& /dev/null

Just use <a href="http://www.bombich.com/software/local.html">DeLocalizer</a>. No terminal and very fast. I haven't tried it since I installed Panther though...

I've seen posts on other forums that it works with Panther.

10.3: Use custom install options to conserve disk space
Authored by: henry on Nov 05, '03 12:52:52PM

I just downloaded and tried it on my virgin Panther installation (clean install) and it worked fine. It seemed to be working for ages without really looking like it was doing anything, but then it completed and reported a 680-odd Mb saving on disk space, which I've just confirmed.

Another (better?) GUI tool to remove localizations
Authored by: petri on Dec 04, '05 01:16:02AM
I just stumbled upon Monolingual, which lives at http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/. Apparently, it is under development and supports 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4. Also, it has a nicer GUI, uses proper authentication and feels a bit more stable IMHO.

I have an even better install hint.

In addition to customizing, always do a clean install (preserving Users).

On my friend's relatively new iBook with the out-of-the-box upgrade install, it took about 3 hours, maybe more. On my 12" PowerBook, everything but the languages clean install, 30-45 minutes. On a 15" DVI PowerBook, same thing but without X11, about 30-45 minutes.

Yes, it does take more HD space, but the speed makes it worthwhile. I think for some reason Panther also does a better job of preserving things. I seem to remember needing to reinstall Photoshop 7 after Jaguar, but after upgrading to Panther everything has worked flawlessly.

On a completely random note, does anyone have any idea why I've seen more black squirrels this year than I've seen in the entire rest of my life?

Clean install?
Authored by: stewby on Nov 02, '03 12:01:34PM

I think you mean archive and install; you can't preserve users on a clean install, because you have to wipe your entire drive. You'd also be guaranteed to have to reinstall Photoshop (and everything else).

Will international web pages still work?
Authored by: teg on Nov 02, '03 02:14:04PM

Will Safari still display foreign language web pages properly without the full international installation? I like seeing Japanese sites rendered with the proper characters, even though I can't read them.

Hi,

Yes, Safari still displays non-Roman characters. I just used Delocalizer and then browsed the BBC's world news pages. Everything seemed to display fine. At least, I saw lots of squiggles... :)
