10.3: Utilize spring loaded folders in column view Desktop
Here's a quick one ... I loved spring loaded folders in OS 9, but there behavior in column-view mode in OS X was never quite right. Panther fixes this. By hovering a file over a folder in column view and hitting space bar (or waiting the amount of time determined in your Finder Preferences), the contents of the folder now spring open in the same column view window instead of opening a new window. Very nice.

In Jaguar the up-popping folder used the setting to determine if a new window had to be opende.

I always move the logfiles that are droppet at the root to the /Library/Logs folder and was - like you - annoyed that the windows popped op in stead of using my allready open column view.
I then changed the view of these folders to be column view (CMD-3) and then the spring loaded folders did as I expected - reused my open window.

I have yet to verify the Panther ignores the "folders-to-be-popped-settings" but from your hint it sounds like it works...

Panther Finder seems to be no different than Jaguar Finder. It still uses the Finder preference "Always open folders in a new window" for spring loaded pop-up folders. So, if that preference is checked, spring loaded folders will still pop-up from column view windows.
