10.3: Restore internet printing from Windows Network
After upgrading to Panther, my Windows machines stopped being able to print to printers attached to my Mac. The Panther upgrade chose to overwrite the .conf files in /etc/cups, but left the printer PPDs in place. Here's what it took to fix it (or create a new one).

To create/restore IPP printers

  1. modify /etc/cups/mime.types and uncomment out application/octet-stream
  2. modify /etc/cups/mime.convs and uncomment out application/octet-stream
  3. Browse to http://localhost:631/printers and click Add Printer
  4. Provide Name, Location, Description of Printer, click Continue.
  5. Choose appropriate device type for printer. A USB printer should appear in the drop down list (e.g. DESKJET 970C (HEWLETT-PACKARD DESJKET 970C)). You can choose that and avoid having to create a the device URL. Click Continue.
  6. Choose Make and Model
Your new printer should now appear in the printer list. (It should also appear in the Printer Setup Utility in Panther as well). A new option in the Printer Setup Utility is to hide a printer from the print dialog shown during a printing. You can hide the printer to avoid confusion for local printer users.

To install the printer in Windows:

  1. Click "Add a Printer" in Printers and Faxes, then click Next
  2. Click "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer", click next
  3. Click "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network"
  4. Fill in the URL (i.e. http://w.x.y.z:631/printers/printer_name).
  5. Select the Manufacturer and Printer Model, and select Yes/No to make printer the default.
If printing fails, make sure that the Windows printer drivers are using the RAW print processor. Happy Printing!

Well, doesn't quite work for me, I get only a generic "USB printer" nothing specific for my Epson 900...And thus am forced to create a URL. Bleh!

I get to the URI screen (on Safari) and leave it to USB but can't go forward until I enter something like the examples given:

file:/path/to/filename.prn
http://hostname:631/ipp/
http://hostname:631/ipp/port1
ipp://hostname/ipp/
ipp://hostname/ipp/port1
lpd://hostname/queue
socket://hostname
socket://hostname:9100

THEN I can select a driver for EPSON 900.

Windows printing

I thought one of the benefits of upgrading to 10.3 would be the transparent ability to see Windows computers with their printers on the network (and vice-versa). Apparently nothing has changed. I had to go through all the CUPS steps on my Mac and the Add Printer on my Windows PC's even though they had already all been set up and working before upgrading to Panther. Very disappointing.

Also, don't forget to enable Printer Sharing in the Sharing System Preferences

[After an Archive upgrade, I forget to reset this and spent 30 minutes troubleshooting CUPS!

In Panther Server there is no printer sharing checkbox. Is there a way to manually turn it on?

I have an interesting little problem. I have set up my printer on Mac OS X (Panther), and managed to find the network printer and set it up on Windows as well. Everything seems ok however when I print from windows.......nothing happens. No error or anything. I can print on Mac OS X fine though. I am sure I am missing something, but I have tried this on two different Macs connecting to two differant windows computers and two differant printers with the same result. I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

I had that problem on Jaguar until I set up a second printer entry for my Canon i860 for access by my wife's Windows PC. I thought that wouldn't be necessary with Panther and I'm still waiting to do what I did on Jaguar 'til I'm sure.

for some reason, device URI is set to file:///dev/null (!) and i see no way to change it. on top of that i don't see an add printer button on that web page :\

what am i doing wrong? :\

vacuums do not suck. they merely provide an absence that allows other objects to take the place of what becomes absent.

how does one "make sure the windows drivers are using the 'raw' print processor"?

i seem to have everything set up on the mac side. however, when i go to add the printer on the windows side using "http://<ip>:631/printers/<printer>", it fails and tells me the specified printer is not available. if in a web browser on the same windows box (running win2k if it matters), i go to the same url, i get a cups page showing the desired printer's status, so this would seem to confirm that i have the correct url and printer name.

cups logs don't seem to record any errors. i see what look like normal "post" requests coming from the windows box. nothing to go on in terms of what is causing the error.

XP:
Start->Printers and Faxes
Right-click on the printer and select Properties
Select the Advanced tab
Select the Print Processor button

2K:
Start->Settings->Printers
Right-click on the printer and select Properties
Select the Advanced tab
Select the Print Processor button

Unfortunately this didn't help my problem of print jobs never arriving at the server.

I've got exactly the same problems than yours. All seems ok from Windows but nothing when I try a test page. It failed too when I try to connect with an URL, and I can't do a lot of things with this web page from gimp-print (http://x.x.x.x:631/...), only print a test page, and see formers print jobs. Interresting to note that as on the macos with the admin rights, I don't have a lots of access in this web page.

But I've found some ways perhaps to explain.

First, on win 2k, verifie that it accept the driver for the printer one time's connected. You can't add a Security user, as me on the macos ("administrator" isn't recognised on the mac).
(raw print is in advanced/print processor)
In winXP, it's different. Verify that Samba's port is cheked, and now, it can add new security account, but in fact, it don't print.

To conclude, I don't have a real solution, but , as said on bottom, it 's probably a problem on Macos, and , for me, it's a problem of rights on the macos.
