10.3: Avoid a Safari and Mail slow down due to fonts Apps
After I installed Panther, Safari and Mail would not load a page or email. It would try to load a page then stall. Being a fan of fonts I had hundreds if fonts loaded. Removing most of the fonts corrected the problem.

[robg adds: Can anyone else confirm a slowdown due to excess fonts? I have about 100 installed, and don't see any slowdowns here...]

Is this related to FontAgent? MacFixit was posting that its autoactivation feature was causing major slowdows in a variety of programs.

I suffered exactly the same problem, and could isolate a corrupted font that was the culprit.

I ran into this same problem, freezing in Safari and unable to download email attachments (also freezing). I installed Font Reserve and was able to open all my fonts and fixed all my problems (just takes forever on a restart).

I've noticed huge slowdowns in some programs in 10.2 and 10.3.

In 10.2, LiveType took literally minutes to start up. I have 800 fonts, so I turned of almost all of them in 10.3's Fontbook and not LiveType starts up in good time. BUT Fontbook takes several minutes to start up.

Who knows, it could be a corrupt font, but how would I find it among 800? Fontbook detected two dozen duplicates, but that's not directly the issue since I disabled 780 or so of the 800 fonts.

Download FontDoctorX, it's demonstration mode allows to scan for damaged fonts, the rest of the features don't work, but this one does.

I had accidently loaded my entire font library in FontAgent Pro and it brought Safari to a standstill. Also Font Book is cool, but even in the best circumstances way sloooowwww.

I can confirm this as well. Justt happened to me yesterday.

I installed some 500 fonts and besides fontbook comeing to a crawl. Safari stoppped loading pages for me. Internet explorer worked fine as well as ichat. I believe mail worked as well though I cant remember.

As to if its a corrupt font or not I dont know. If anyone has any ideas on how to find the culprit easily Im all ears. But Im not about to sift through that many fonts for this.

P.S. Im a fan of fontbook and I realy hope to see many improvements and features added in the future. It realy could become a great app for many people if they developed it furthure. Id realy love to see a sort of scaled down verion of a font store implemented directly with the program similar to itunes.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107641

I didn't have the "Times RO" font activated but it was another.
