10.3: Restart after install cured printing problem System
Shortly after installing Mac OS X Panther 10.3 (retail boxed copy), I discovered that I could no longer print to my Xerox laser printer (AppleTalk over ethernet). On each occasion the print monitor window would show the file apparently being processed (sometimes I'd glimpse a message: "Empty print file!") but it appeared that no data got as far as the printer. Deleting and recreating the printer made no difference.

After a restart the problem cured itself.

I hope this will save someone a lengthy trawl through plists and other configuration files.

10.3: Software Compatibility
Authored by: awpadmin on Oct 27, '03 12:09:21PM

I just broke open 3 retail box copies of OX 10.3 and I am so terrified on the effects of my system. I followed the previous posting on how to prep for the upgrade but I am more concerned about the functionality of my apps. I just called apple and this is what the guy tells me, "Generally, if your software does not function normally than it may not be compatible." So, initially my call was about if FileMaker 5.5 v2 would work in 10.3 but i also have other apps that I use frequently. Can anyone point me to a resource that has a software compatibility chart for 10.3? Here are the main apps I am concerned about:

FileMaker 5.5 v2
Photoshop 7.01
Illustrator 10.3
Acrobat 6
Quark 6
Flash MX
Dreamweaver MX
Toast Titanium 5.2
MS Office/Word 10.5
Remote Desktop 1.2
Norton A/V 8.04

Thanks.

Well, by compatible, if you mean that these applications will launch, let you open a file, let you edit a file, let you create a file and save such files, here is what i can tell you:

FileMaker Pro v.5.5 - seems to work just as before. Lets me connect to my FM Pro server. Lets me create standalone files, etc.

Photoshop 7.01, Illustrator 10.3, Acrobat 6 - all seem to work OK, although I run into a strange visual anomoly w/PS 7 in the open/save dialog. Because Panther takes over the dialogs with it's "Finder-like" open/save dialogs, the left sidebar doesn't always show all items correctly. It seems to show what it can, but if you resize the dialog, parts disappear, at least for me. Kinda hard to explain. Anyone else have that?

Quark 6 - don't have it so I can't say anything about it. I did notice that running QuarkXPress 4.11 under Classic doesn't leave artifacts under my dock when I switch to another app or hide XPress, etc. as it did under Jaguar. That's nice.

Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX - I don't have these either, although I've heard scattered reports of some issues with Macromedia apps on Panther. I don't remember the specifics. Check around for that though.

Toast Titanium 5.2 - I just burned a CD (Mac/PC Extended hybrid) with it a few minutes ago. No issues whatsoever. Haven't tested all formats though, like DVD-R, IS0, etc. so YMMV.

MS Office/Word, etc - I've run all apps except Entourage, which I don't use, and they all work fine as far as I can tell.

Remote Desktop - You'll need to make sure you d/l Apple's updated RD software from Software update. After that, it seems to work A-O-K.

Norton AV - Don't have this. I use Virex (.Mac member), and that works OK. Can't speak for Norton AV though.

I hope this helps somewhat.

10.3: Restart after install cured printing problem

I got this exact problem with an HP LaserJet 5000N, and it went away when I tried restarting according to the hint. Something else that might be relevant is that before I discovered the hint, I tried repairing permissions, and I'm getting recurring issues with files in /private/etc/cups . Disk Utility thinks they should be owned by root:admin but they keep getting reset to daemon:wheel.

I had the same problems with permissions and the "Empty Print File!" error.

I deleted the cups spooler files (c00222, c00223, etc) in /private/var/spool/cups/ and everything now works again.

10.3: Restart after install cured printing problem

I hit this today. User comes in with new 10.3.3 iBook G4. He's been trying to set it up at home for his printer there and came in this morning early to try to set it up with our network printers. No luck either place, just "Empty print file!" error before job flies off to /dev/null.

I can't get an exact series of install steps he tried but, long story short, for some reason there is no /var/spool/cups/tmp folder.

Simple fix:
su as root
cd /var/spool/cups
mkdir tmp
chown root:lp tmp/
chmod 770 tmp/
chmod ug+t tmp/
exit (before you do something stupid as root)

This basically makes the temp folder needed by cups for spooling, with read-write-execute permissions for owner(root) and group (lp) and the sticky bit set.

Keep in mind, this "Empty print file!" error was the only problem we were having. I'm suspecting some sort of b0rken HP install, but I can't be sure.

Hope this helps,

Dirk
