Yahoo mail filters all junk email before you see it. If you read your mail on Yahoo, you probably don't care. But if you forward your email to another account, you might be interested in seeing what Yahoo considers junk email. Here's how to use Mail.app to see the filtered spam before it gets filtered:
- Switch your Yahoo POP access to forwarding. Enter your address.
- Make sure Mail is accessing this account well. Now watch your account fill up with spam from your Yahoo account.
- To fix this, set up a rule in Mail (Preferences -> Rules). In the "If any of these conditions are met:" area, go to the pull-down menu on the left and select "Edit header list..". Then in the following box, select "Add a header" which is X-YahooFilteredBulk, and then select OK.
- Select this header on the left in the rules box and in the next dropdown select "contains". Then in the text area to the right of that, simply type a . (fullstop)
- In the "Perform the following actions" area, you can perform whatever you want to do with this spam. Probably the same as your default Junk Filter -- "Transfer Message" to mailbox "Junk."
Hope that helps.
[robg adds: This hint originally dealt with a POP access problem between Mail and Yahoo mail, but willjwade sent a follow-up saying that the problem had been resolved -- it was discussed in this thread on the Apple Discussions site. I modestly re-wrote the intro to reflect another use of the information -- how to see what Yahoo considers junk mail.]
