Install OS X updates on hard drives with limited space

The hard disk on my aging Wallstreet has only about 460 meg of free space. When the System Preferences Update function insisted that it needed at least 502 meg to upgrade to 10.2.8, I decided to see if the downloadable 40+ meg standalone installer could make do with less. It can, and informed me that it could install with only 172 meg of free space.

So, if you're unable to install OS X updates with the Updater due to limited disk space, try downloading the stand-alone installer. Its needs are far more modest.
