AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
Oct 15, '03 10:07:00AM • Contributed by: La Shampoo
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices! Thanks to the common effort of USB-TCP Bridge (from Florent Pillet) and Malsync (from Tom Whittaker) on an original idea of Jonathan Z. Simon. The result is a single Mac OS X app that you launch when want you want to synch your Palm device with AvantGo®.

Well -- I can almost get this to work. I hotsync my USB Treo 90 on a PowerMac G4 dual 450 running OS X 10.2.8. The hotsync works flawlessly, normally.

Same situation here. No transfer happening.
Sync happens, but no data gets transferred
I have the same problem. The Sync happens, but there's no data transferred from the Avant Go site to my Palm.
The key is to disable HotSync Mgr.
I too had problems getting this to connect and sync. Following some others advice, I opened HotSync Manager and set it to "Disabled"; quit HotSync Mgr. and then open AvantGo USB Bridge.
You should have success upon syncing. Also, be sure your server (sync.avantgo.com, port 80) and account settings are correct (check AvantGo website) on your Palm through AG Connect. I've had nothing but success since then and boy is it great to have AvantGo back on my Palm!!

followed the instructions, what little there were

My friend, you are no geek and for sure not an "uber" one either.
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
FWIW, and thanks to the info on this thread, I got AvantGo working on a Tungsten E (with the USB cable plugged into the keyboard port). Running Panther 10.3.2 on a G4.
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
I also was excited when I saw this app on VT yesterday -- but it turns out that I have a more fundamental problem: although my AvantGo account is still active (after lying dormant for nearly two years), I have since acquired both a new Mac (that is not OS 9 bootable) and a new Palm -- and thus have no prior installation of the AvantGo Palm software or conduits. Moreover, I cannot get the installer from the AvantGo web site (which is only for OS 8 & 9) to do anything meaningful on my Mac (with 10.2.6).
For others looking for additional help, try the comments on VersionTracker and this web site. But I'm still stuck, as I do not have a "AG Connect" application on my Palm -- and I cannot find one on AvantGo's website either. Ideas?

AvantGo now appears to offer the files you need on their web site. It's here in the My Account=>Software Downloads section. HTH!

I downloaded the prc, but it keeps crashing the Sync. So, I stopped trying to set it up. Any ideas as to how to get it to work on an iBook G4 w/10.3?
AvantGo ifor Palm OS 5 MAC
Now that we finally have a way to use Avantgo with OSX, I need to find a way ro get the version of Avantgo for Palm OS5 on my mac.
I got it to work
It failed a couple of times, but perseverence made it work! To get it to work, I had to disable HotSync, unplug/plug my USB HotSync cable, and re-launch the app a few times. On top of that, I had to kill -HUP {pid-of-malsync} (which I found through "top") every time it crashed. I also found it worked if I switched to a different app, and then *didn't* switch back to "AvantGo USB sync" until it was done (10-15 minutes since I've got ~1.6MB of content).
I got it to work
Glad to hear *somebody* got it to work. I can't.
I got it to work (not!)
Has anyone seen the "options" active? They're all grayed out in my copy...
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
this command "/bin/tcsh ./AvantGo" does not seem to do anything, I never get "listeneing to port" or "Please press hotsync"
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
I had this same problem until I unplugged the USB HotSync cable from my TiBook and plugged it back in. I sometimes had to do this a couple of times. In addition, I had to do a "top" to get the pid (process id) of "malsync" and then I did a "kill -HUP {pid-of-malsync}". Then I hit HotSync again, and unplug/plug USB (if needed). HTH!

Two things, one is a basic tip and the other is a comment on this:
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
Well I got it to work - almost. It will connect, it will update device configuration, it will find updated web pages and then start loading them on my device, but it never finishes. Either the program crashes, or the sent/received just stops then it times out.
No luck yet; VERY slow
First attempt: Data trickles very slowly through the bridge. "Searching the Internet for updated Web pages" took about ten minutes on a dual G5 with a DSL connection. Then it stalled midway through cleaning off the outdated pages; my Palm reported the HotSync was complete. Second attempt: Now "Updating device configuration" is taking a while... about 15 minutes so far, with only about 30k sent and received through the bridge. Wondering if there's a problem, I interrupt the HotSync. Third attempt: "Updating device configuration" is once again the bottleneck. Data is flowing to the device at about 1,375 k/minute. It took 20 minutes to get to the next stage, "Connection successful." And then... "Please upgrade your AvantGo software by visiting http://avantgo.com - Unable to create user Config Databage (sic). - Done." Still trying... I'd love to get this to work.
No luck yet; VERY slow
I've been chatting with one of the devlopers this morning. There appears to be a problem with Palm OS 5 devices. They're looking into the problem (and it will be added to the ReadMe file...).
No luck yet; VERY slow (but not OS 5 related...)
I don't think that's the key to the problems we're seeing here. At least for me -- I've got a regular OS 4 Palm.
No luck yet; VERY slow (but not OS 5 related...)
I followed the link from the story (actually, the link to AvantGo USB sync doesn't mention its developer, but I got it by deleting the filename from the URL, and maybe the directory), and got the IM address, but http://osx-palm-tools.sourceforge.net/ or http://www.tomw.org/malsync/ are probably a better avenues. Be advised that they might be sleeping, as the guy I chatted with was in France!
BTW, I told him I thought it was slow and that it took me 10-15 minutes to transfer >2MB of AvantGo stuff, and he was surprised. He thought that was fast! He said about the same amount of data took 1/2 hour. ---
Slow, but it worked
Hey, I finally got it to work!
No luck yet; VERY slow
I had a similar chat... they're thinking this works best with AvantGo v4, which doesn't run on Palm OS 5.x.

EVERYONE

it worked for me first try. took 35 minutes on my creaky old dial-up, but it worked.

I'm running OS X (10.2.8) on a 800 Mhz G4 Titanium PB with 1G of mem.

Glory! Joy!
AvantGo is back on Palm devices
Thanks to the author's site with a link to the Palm Executables I re-installed Avantgo after a long absence on my Palms. Through the wifi connection of the Tungsten C it syncs faster than ever! I tried the USB thing and it choked on the proxy settings at work. Anyone with a Tungsten C and wireless connection can have AvantGo easily.

Works for me with no problems. Very quick too. Setup:
Slow, gray, and sleeping
I am also having problems getting this to work.
Slow, gray, and sleeping
I had to stop the bridge and start it again before the actual sync would work (ie, hit 'stop', cancel sync, hit 'start', resync). I'm assuming the 'options' are nothing more than visually showing you the script it's running.
Slow, gray, and sleeping
I'm pretty sure the greyed-out options are what would be available if you were running the standalone version of USB-TCP Bridge, as opposed to this specialized version hard-wired to malsync for AvantGo synching.

Hello everyone. Thanks to some users feedback, I've made improvement to the AvantGo shell script. Now, when the AvantGo connect application starts:

AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
Great news re bringing Avantgo back to the Mac. I've followed the instructions but haven't been able to sync successfully with my T3. I'm on System 10.3.1.
Try changing server address and port setting to make Avantgo USB work
Lack of Avantgo has been one of the main things holding me back from OSX. A couple of years ago, I had trouble with Avantgo who then suggested I manually change the server address to 64.157.224.7 and the port to 443. It has been much more reliable since I did that. I just tried these settings in Avantgo USB 1.2 and it worked although it is still much slower than in OS 9. Nevertheless this is a good start and I hope for more progress.

argh, ok found the palm executable.
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
I finally found the .prc files needed (thank you, Tom W) and they are installed, but I still can't sync - I get a timeout error from my Tungsten E. v5.x I too feel as though I have left a step out, and yes, I did read the funky manual...several times....
Problems
I have OSX 10.3 and a Palm Tungsten T3 device (Palm OS 5). When I run AvantGo USB 1.2.1 I get:
Executing command: /bin/tcsh ./AvantGo Stopping Previous malsync Stopping HotSync... Start 11/01/2004, 03:09:54 Listening to port: net: Please press the HotSync button now...But nothing happens when I press the hotsync button. The Hotsync application has been disabled. The USB Port Status indicates Connected, and the TCP socket status also says Socket Connected. But no data is passed between AGUSB and the palm. Advice appreciated.
T3 not on the working list
The devices currently supported by the USB-TCP bridge can be found here The list states that the T3 times out. Guess we need to wait still :o(
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm - sort of.
Thanks to all the chat on this forum i have been able to sync my Handspring with Avantgo which is a great start. Only problem is i do not get the channels i have selected on the avantgo site, i am stuck with 4 channels that i have no interest in, despite re-syncing a few times. |
