AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices Apps
AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices! Thanks to the common effort of USB-TCP Bridge (from Florent Pillet) and Malsync (from Tom Whittaker) on an original idea of Jonathan Z. Simon. The result is a single Mac OS X app that you launch when want you want to synch your Palm device with AvantGo®.
  1. Launch AvantGo USB sync application.
  2. Press the sync button on your USB cradle.
  3. After AvantGo sync, "Done" should appear in the drawer window, then quit the AvantGo USB sync program.
You can download the Mac OS X AvantGo USB sync application from lashampoo.net [398KB download].

AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
Authored by: joeholmes on Oct 15, '03 12:13:34PM

Well -- I can almost get this to work. I hotsync my USB Treo 90 on a PowerMac G4 dual 450 running OS X 10.2.8. The hotsync works flawlessly, normally.

I launched this new Avantgo bridge software and followed all directions, and it looks like it ought to work. The "USB Port Status" reports that my Palm is connected, and the "TCP Socket Status" reports that's made a connection.

But no data is transferred. Though it's not supposed to be required, I turned off normal hotsync. Is there a port I need to open in my Netgear firewall? I tried turning off the System Pref's firewall but that did no good. I'm guessing here...

Anyone else get this to work?

Sync happens, but no data gets transferred

I have the same problem. The Sync happens, but there's no data transferred from the Avant Go site to my Palm.

What's the secret?

The key is to disable HotSync Mgr.
Authored by: pairof9s on Oct 15, '03 01:10:23PM
I too had problems getting this to connect and sync. Following some others advice, I opened HotSync Manager and set it to "Disabled"; quit HotSync Mgr. and then open AvantGo USB Bridge.

You should have success upon syncing. Also, be sure your server (sync.avantgo.com, port 80) and account settings are correct (check AvantGo website) on your Palm through AG Connect.

I've had nothing but success since then and boy is it great to have AvantGo back on my Palm!!

My friend, you are no geek and for sure not an "uber" one either.

The result is not crap. What you sent in your comment had NOTHING to do with the original post. No compiling is necessary, not is running any pilot-link.

You only need pilot-link if you're either too astray from the original instructions or if you're stubbornly deciding to use a third-party sync tool, in which case the original instructions have NOTHING to do with your problems.

I do agree in one thing, tho'. Pilot-link is pure crap.

FWIW, and thanks to the info on this thread, I got AvantGo working on a Tungsten E (with the USB cable plugged into the keyboard port). Running Panther 10.3.2 on a G4.

I also was excited when I saw this app on VT yesterday -- but it turns out that I have a more fundamental problem: although my AvantGo account is still active (after lying dormant for nearly two years), I have since acquired both a new Mac (that is not OS 9 bootable) and a new Palm -- and thus have no prior installation of the AvantGo Palm software or conduits. Moreover, I cannot get the installer from the AvantGo web site (which is only for OS 8 & 9) to do anything meaningful on my Mac (with 10.2.6).

For others looking for additional help, try the comments on VersionTracker and this web site. But I'm still stuck, as I do not have a "AG Connect" application on my Palm -- and I cannot find one on AvantGo's website either. Ideas?

I downloaded the prc, but it keeps crashing the Sync. So, I stopped trying to set it up. Any ideas as to how to get it to work on an iBook G4 w/10.3?

the USB bridge works nicely, though.

Thanks

AvantGo ifor Palm OS 5 MAC
Authored by: jay friday on Oct 20, '03 09:00:39PM

Now that we finally have a way to use Avantgo with OSX, I need to find a way ro get the version of Avantgo for Palm OS5 on my mac.
I just got a Tungsten E, and it won't work with the version of Avantgo I have.
I can't seem to find the OS5 version for the Mac.

I got it to work
Authored by: the_webmaestro on Oct 15, '03 01:23:58PM

It failed a couple of times, but perseverence made it work! To get it to work, I had to disable HotSync, unplug/plug my USB HotSync cable, and re-launch the app a few times. On top of that, I had to kill -HUP {pid-of-malsync} (which I found through "top") every time it crashed. I also found it worked if I switched to a different app, and then *didn't* switch back to "AvantGo USB sync" until it was done (10-15 minutes since I've got ~1.6MB of content).

Glad to hear *somebody* got it to work. I can't.

I've disabled HotSync (every time), I've tried the USB cable in different ports on my Mac, I've restarted the Palm, the Mac...

Frankly, I wish we could get suggestions from the developer, but this looks pretty As-Is. (Not that I'll complain about freeware!)

Authored by: the_webmaestro on Oct 15, '03 03:24:19PM

I had this same problem until I unplugged the USB HotSync cable from my TiBook and plugged it back in. I sometimes had to do this a couple of times. In addition, I had to do a "top" to get the pid (process id) of "malsync" and then I did a "kill -HUP {pid-of-malsync}". Then I hit HotSync again, and unplug/plug USB (if needed). HTH!

AvantGo is back on Mac OS X for USB Palm devices
Authored by: eduo on Oct 17, '03 04:29:16PM

Two things, one is a basic tip and the other is a comment on this:

1.-You can easily do a "killall -HUP malsync" and not worry about the PID numbers. Or do "ps -auwx | grep malsync" which is much quicker than the "top" method.

2.-"-HUP" is useless in this context, as the malsync program quits after any KILL signal and DOES NOT seem to reload its configuration files (which is what "-HUP" supposedly does).

Well I got it to work - almost. It will connect, it will update device configuration, it will find updated web pages and then start loading them on my device, but it never finishes. Either the program crashes, or the sent/received just stops then it times out.

Have tried about ten times now.

I am using an NR70v ver 4 of Avantgo, on a dual G4 Tower.

No luck yet; VERY slow
Authored by: speechpoet on Oct 15, '03 02:17:45PM

First attempt: Data trickles very slowly through the bridge. "Searching the Internet for updated Web pages" took about ten minutes on a dual G5 with a DSL connection. Then it stalled midway through cleaning off the outdated pages; my Palm reported the HotSync was complete.

Second attempt: Now "Updating device configuration" is taking a while... about 15 minutes so far, with only about 30k sent and received through the bridge. Wondering if there's a problem, I interrupt the HotSync.

Third attempt: "Updating device configuration" is once again the bottleneck. Data is flowing to the device at about 1,375 k/minute. It took 20 minutes to get to the next stage, "Connection successful." And then... "Please upgrade your AvantGo software by visiting http://avantgo.com - Unable to create user Config Databage (sic). - Done."

Still trying... I'd love to get this to work.

I've been chatting with one of the devlopers this morning. There appears to be a problem with Palm OS 5 devices. They're looking into the problem (and it will be added to the ReadMe file...).

I don't think that's the key to the problems we're seeing here. At least for me -- I've got a regular OS 4 Palm.

Any email address to the developers they'd feel comfortable passing out?

I followed the link from the story (actually, the link to AvantGo USB sync doesn't mention its developer, but I got it by deleting the filename from the URL, and maybe the directory), and got the IM address, but http://osx-palm-tools.sourceforge.net/ or http://www.tomw.org/malsync/ are probably a better avenues. Be advised that they might be sleeping, as the guy I chatted with was in France!

BTW, I told him I thought it was slow and that it took me 10-15 minutes to transfer >2MB of AvantGo stuff, and he was surprised. He thought that was fast! He said about the same amount of data took 1/2 hour.

Slow, but it worked
Authored by: speechpoet on Oct 15, '03 05:36:19PM

Hey, I finally got it to work!

I sync'ed to AvantGo on the office PC (put down the bats, everyone - we just use it to proof web sites), then sync'ed on the Mac, and it worked fine... just slowly. Still, for the convenience of not having to keep plugging and unplugging my sync cable, I'll happily use this.

And by the way, it's with a Tungsten T and AvantGo 5, so that's good news on the compatibility front.

Thanks to the author's site with a link to the Palm Executables I re-installed Avantgo after a long absence on my Palms. Through the wifi connection of the Tungsten C it syncs faster than ever! I tried the USB thing and it choked on the proxy settings at work. Anyone with a Tungsten C and wireless connection can have AvantGo easily.

Slow, gray, and sleeping
Authored by: rluttman on Oct 16, '03 10:49:50AM

I am also having problems getting this to work.

I get either:

1. Executing command: /bin/sh ./avantgo.sh

ERROR: Address already in use (48)

Unable to bind to port: net:
Please use --help for more information

pilot_connect: No such process

Done (returned error 1)

- The TCP socket doesn't connect

- or after receiving 1920 bytes from the device it stops receiving data and the sync eventually times out. I can restart the sync but the same thing happens after the 1920 bytes received. Any ideas? (ibook 900)

Plus, as others have mentioned, ALL of the options are grayed out. Any ideas there?

I had to stop the bridge and start it again before the actual sync would work (ie, hit 'stop', cancel sync, hit 'start', resync). I'm assuming the 'options' are nothing more than visually showing you the script it's running.

I'm pretty sure the greyed-out options are what would be available if you were running the standalone version of USB-TCP Bridge, as opposed to this specialized version hard-wired to malsync for AvantGo synching.

  2. previous malsync process are killed
Plus: I've made more comprehensive instructions in the readme files. You can download the new version here.

It only works with old Avantgo on OS4 though...?
This new release is already outdated?

Great news re bringing Avantgo back to the Mac. I've followed the instructions but haven't been able to sync successfully with my T3. I'm on System 10.3.1.

The message I get is:

USB Port Status: Connected (0x0830/0x0060)

Bytes received from device: 0
Bytes sent to device:0

Any suggestions?

Try changing server address and port setting to make Avantgo USB work
Authored by: passenga on Nov 12, '03 07:34:06AM

Lack of Avantgo has been one of the main things holding me back from OSX. A couple of years ago, I had trouble with Avantgo who then suggested I manually change the server address to 64.157.224.7 and the port to 443. It has been much more reliable since I did that. I just tried these settings in Avantgo USB 1.2 and it worked although it is still much slower than in OS 9. Nevertheless this is a good start and I hope for more progress.

This works really well.
AG Connect + AvantGo on the Palm.
Only this program on the Mac.
I had to remove some channels that no longer exist since I last used AvantGo 2 years ago.
I manually change the server address to 64.157.224.7 and the port to 443.
Pressed the Hotsync button, and done, no problems at all.
Thanks very much, I missed having AvantGo.

I have OSX 10.3 and a Palm Tungsten T3 device (Palm OS 5). When I run AvantGo USB 1.2.1 I get:
Executing command: /bin/tcsh ./AvantGo

Stopping Previous malsync
Stopping HotSync...
Start 11/01/2004, 03:09:54

   Listening to port: net:

Please press the HotSync button now...
But nothing happens when I press the hotsync button. The Hotsync application has been disabled. The USB Port Status indicates Connected, and the TCP socket status also says Socket Connected. But no data is passed between AGUSB and the palm. Advice appreciated.
