Synchronize your Palm with IOGear's Serial-to-USB Adapter Apps

I just came back from a certain major retail computer chain, excited about my IOGear USB PDA/Serial Adapter (model GUC232A). It was the only converter they sold that would allow me to sync my (serial-only) Palm Vx.

After following iSync's help, by putting the Palm Desktop and the Palm Conduit (see the right-hand side of the web page) on my computer, the Sync still wouldn't work.

Then I found IOGear's driver index. You have to download and install the driver, restart your computer, (I guess) select the new conduit and unselect all other conduits in HotSync Manager (/Applications -> Palm -> HotSync Manager by default), restart your computer again, and reselect the conduit. Things should then work.

Hope this helps!

IOGear's driver is flawed, use Keyspan USA-19QW

The IOGEAR product is based on the Prolific Tech PL2303 chip, as are a number of other USB-Serial adapters in the PC market. The IOGear of the driver for Mac OS X appear to be an adaptation of the Prolific Tech driver for Mac OS X and has the objectionable characteristic of generating numerous entries in the system log during operation. This clutters and grows the system log, generates a lot of disk access activity and reduces the performance of the serial connection. Here is a sample of the message (this is just a !short portion! of what was generated while HotSync'ing my Palm).

you will see <system name> as YOUR system name

(etc, etc, etc)

So far, IOGEAR tech support is in denial of this problem. Some others have reported the problem and some have offered hacks to overcome the problem. I cannot speak for the effectiveness of the driver hacks so I'll not endorse them here:

On the other hand:
The Keyspan USA-19QW does not exhibit this problem and is based on a differenct chip set and driver. I recommend the Keyspan solution.
