Disable Office v.X Project Gallery to prevent crash at launch Apps
I had a bug wherein Excel and Power Point would crash at launch if the application icon is clicked. But when I was clicking on a PowerPoint or Excel file directly, everything was fine. So it seemed there was a problem with Project Gallery which appears on start and causes the crash. I disabled "Show Project Gallery on startup" in General Preferences and it works -- I can now launch the applications via a double-click.

Disable Office v.X Project Gallery to prevent crash at launch

I had the exact same thing happen with the same two applications. Several long conversations with Microsoft support were unable to resolve it, so I solved it the same way you did. I still have a problem with PowerPoint taking 5 minutes to start while it scans an external hard drive attached to my iMac.

I had the same problem but I found the answer. Look for the DivX component in Library->Quicktime Folder (or ~->Library->Quicktime Folder) and take it out. Now see if starting Office ten applications crash now. There is a little known bug between a certain DivX component and Microsoft Office. This has been fixed with the latest Divx component.

I found that a combination of these factors caused a crash. OS X 10.4.4, PowerPoint 10.1.6, and the latest DivX component, 3ivx D4 4.5.1. I found that if the component is installed AND you bring up the Project Gallery, PowerPoint unexpectedly quits. If the 3ivx component is removed, Project Gallery works fine. If the 3ivx component is left installed and Project Gallery is avoided, PowerPoint also functions normally.

I'm avoiding Project Gallery for now. Puzzling...

Hurrah!...Thank you! I've been struggling with a crashing Microsoft Word (Microsoft Office X) since my upgrade to Mac OS 10.6.4! Removing the 3ivxVideoCodec.component from my Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime folder fixed everything! No more crashing on startup, and I can use the Project Gallery again! Thanks again!! :)

What do you do when the opening screen won't stay long enough to turn off the Gallery or get to general preferences to uncheck it .
Crashing only since 10.6.5 installed.

PS
I have no Divx components and even tried to reinstall Powerpoint. But the gallery is the default when the program opens. So no can do to turn off.
