Enable/disable wake on admin access in 10.2.8 Network
I just updated to 10.2.8 and, at least on my laptop, the old checkbox in the Energy Saver pane for enabling and disabling 'Wake on admin access' is gone ... but ... we can still use pmset.

So, here is how to enable wake on admin access:
sudo pmset womp 1
To disable it:
sudo pmset womp 0
BTW, womp stands for "wake on ethernet magic packet."

[robg adds: This is the first I've heard of losing the Network Admin checkbox with 10.2.8 -- can anyone else confirm? It's still there on our G3/500 and PowerBook...]

My Dual 1GHz G4 still has the Wake for Network Admin Access checkbox, but my dual USB iBook does not. Both are running 10.2.8 and are similarly configured.

On my dual USB iBook (600) it is gone too, but on my boyfriend's one USB iBook (466) it is still there. We are both running 10.2.8, with similar configurations.

Checkbox is still there on my machines. But wake on admin seems not to work anymore - so I'll try this hint

On my AlBook it is gone too, but on my Cube it is still there...
But the space on the window where it was previously is still free... maybe there's some (hidden) option to display/hide it? Really strange.

Enable/disable wake on admin access in 10.2.8

I know why; I found out some time ago.

An Airport card cannot be awakened from sleep by the magic admin packet. Only a wired connection will wake up. This is probably because they power-down the Airport card during sleep to save power.

So the desktops can wake, but the wireless laptops cannot, at least for the Airport network port. The checkbox should be visible for the wired port.

I have a client who solved the wakeup problem for his airport-equipped G4 DP 1.4G by adding an outboard D-Link DWL-810 wireless access port. We plugged the D-Link into the wired Ethernet connector on the G4; it's only used to wake up the system!

This is interesting. 4 machines on my network, G3 700 SE iMac - wake for admin still there, G4 700 FlatPanel iMac - wake for admin still there, G3 700 DualUSB iBook - wake for admin still there. Now the strange one, G3 350 Yosemite. This is the machine that's configured to allow remote login, FTP and WebServices, wake for admin gone.

And if that doesnt beat all, under options for battery power on the iBook there was never an option to wake after a power failure but there is now.

I don't know about you, but the wake on magic packet box was never present on my G3 blue and white even with previous system versions. I don't think the hardware supports it. iMac Flat Panel still has it though.

Gone on 1Ghz Ti-book w/airport card

The checkbox has dissappeared on my 1Ghz Ti-book. It has an airport card, which would confirm the airport theory.

Just connect your portable to AC power. Then re-open System Preferences and boom! There it is! At least that's the way it works on my iBook 500.

IMHO, this is a plain stupid and useless "feature".

The G3/233 can't be woken by a magic packet so it makes sense to not have the check box visible.

Mac OS X: About Energy Saver Options

"Wake for network administrative access"

Also known as "Wake-on-LAN," this allows network administrators and
certain applications to wake the computer from sleep by sending it a
special type of network packet.

Available on these computers:

    * All Macintosh computers produced in 2003
    * Power Mac G5
    * Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) or later
    * Power Mac G4 Cube (all models)
    * PowerBook (FireWire) or later
    * iBook (all models)
    * iMac (Early 2001) or later

BTW Side Track is very nice.

My iMac DV 400mhz has WOMP, but only for OS 9. Under 10.2, it doesn't have it. I'll have to upgrade it to 10.2.8 to see if it returns.

If not, I'll try the WOMP command in this hint to hopefully restore the functionality.

I find WOMP useful as the iMac is usually sleeping in the other room. Would save me from walking down the hall to wake it when I need to get a file from it.
