Force iPhoto to ask about camera handling Apps
When I first used iPhoto I told it that I didn't want iPhoto to automatically launch when I plugged my camera in. Turns out now, however, I would like that behavior, so in order to reset that preference, quit iPhoto, open the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, located in your user's Library -> Preferences directory, and find this line:

<key>AskHotPlugAction</key>
 <true/>
Change true/ to false, save the file and quit, and then launch iPhoto and you will be able to choose how you want iPhoto to behave when you connect a camera.

The simple way to change this preference (via the GUI) is to open up Image Capture. Within this application's preferences is a pull down menu to select what application (if any) to open upon detection of a digital camera.

Alternatively, you can use
defaults write com.apple.iPhoto AskHotPlugAction false
from within a Terminal window.
Note iPhoto should not be active for this to work out OK.

You can also open Image Capture and go to Preferences. Under Camera Preferences, there's an option to have iPhoto open whenever a digital camera is connected.
