10.3: File and folder labels are visible in Classic / OS 9

The labeling used in Panther (10.3) appears to be the same as that used in OS 9 and earlier versions of the Mac OS. So much so that if Panther has color-labeled an item, Classic running in 10.2 can see the colors, even if 10.2 cannot. I think we can safely assume Classic running in 10.3 can see the colors , too(ooo, shiny!).

[robg adds: Overall, Apple did a good job of implementing labels for OS X, with a couple of caveats. First, it seems that labels apply across multiple users; label something in the Applications folder, and all users see the color you've selected. Second, unlike OS 9, it's not possible to change the selected colors - you're stuck with Apple's selection (super hint if someone figures out what to modify to fix that one!). Finally, make sure you visit Finder -> Preferences -> Labels icon, unless you really want all your red-coded files to be labeled "Red," your green-coded files to be labeled "Green," etc.]
