10.3: Sort Address Book entries by name or company Apps
I note that there is a minor change in the Address Book while editing in the name, job title, and company sections. Below the company line is a small button that, when clicked, changes the sort order for that card to "by company" instead of "by name." Unclick and the card is sorted by name.

[robg adds: You can also activate the sort order change with the menu (Card -> This is a Company) or via the keyboard shortcut (Command-). I'm noting it here because it's quite useful, and the small checkbox may be overlooked (there's no pop-up tip, and you only see it in edit mode).]

It is in the menu of 10.2, very useful to me.
Card -> Show as -> Company

Can't make a smart group of just companies!

I can't figure out how to make a smart group that contains JUST companies. Or rather, what I really want, is a group that shows JUST real people but amazingly there is no paramater for that in smart options! Arrrrgh.

I just want a list of people and not have it cluttered by mailing list addresses and such (added to address book so the junk filter won't make the emails junk)

It's funny because even in 2007 (pre-leopard era), there is still no way to simply do that...

Yeah, you can, sort of. The thing that differentiates a Company Card from a personal card with an associated company, is that on the Company Card, the Name (first, middle, surname) will be blank. Only the "Company Name" field will be filled.

So if you have a smart group that matches ALL "Company is set" + "Name is not set" then you'll have smart group of all companies.

For a smart group that contains only people, and not companies, you would probably have to go with "Name is set", but that will show dummy and mailing list and spam-pass entries as well (if those cards have names as well as e-mail addresses on them). It isn't ideal.

To keep mailing list and spam-pass entries away from the real people, you can put a searchable string into the Notes section of the not-real-people cards that a smart group can search for and exclude if found. But that requires manual up-keep, and leaves a lot of mostly-useless cards in the database.

A better way is to put all your dummy, mailing list and spam-pass entries on one card. Leave the Name fields, and the Company Name field empty, and it won't appear in either of the "Real people" and "Companies" smart groups described above. Just keep adding the necessary e-mail addresses to that card.

If you leave all the name fields blank, the card will appear in the Address Book list under the first e-mail address listed. Mail will also attempt to auto-complete using that name, which is not desirable. So, for the first e-mail address on that card, enter something like "Ω Spam" (option-Z for Ω).

The omega will force the card to the bottom of the list, and auto-complete won't try and use this card name (unless you're entering Ω in an e-mail address for some odd reason).

Thanks for the tip!
I never knew the Name wasn't set for companies...
It still think a bit complex for something that should be quite basic...

It seems to work fine on companies (Company is set *AND* Name is not set) but not so much for peoples (who are not set as a company). Anyway, I found out that working with an Applescript (using "people whose company is no") was a more accurate. Of course I loose the automatic behavior of Smart Group but since I don't add 10 new contact per day...

Thanks anyway!
I've learn something new today!

I ought to stress that the name isn't usually set for company cards, but it might have been set for some reason. The address book doesn't automatically un-set the name on cards that are turned into company cards.

(I'm pretty sure that's a vCard convention, though, and it is how Address Book recognises a foreign imported vCard as being a company card: empty N, and FN=ORG. So AB should be un-setting the N field on export at least. If you add a name to a company card, export it, edit it with TextEdit to remove the two custom AB fields at the end and then import it, it will become a person card.)

Hopefully the Leopard AB will have the company flag in the smart group criteria.
