An install tip for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Apps
After too many minutes of frustration installing Aspyr's Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 this afternoon, I thought I'd document this one for future reference ... at least as of version 1.0, the game must be installed on your boot volume. There's no warning to this effect in the Read Me or the installer ... but if you choose another drive, the game will just unexpectedly quit after choosing your game settings.

I even tried using aliases on the boot volume, but got the same behavior. Only by moving the entire game folder onto the boot drive was I able to make it work.

As an aside, the game seems relatively interesting, though it's quite the resource hog -- even at 800x600 with fog enabled, the frame rate really suffers in spots on my G4/733 with GeForce3. And I think I'd need to get a gamepad to more accurately review the playability -- this is clearly not a keyboard game! :)

I know this is not really a hint, but i have this game working great (with fog enabled) at 800x600 on my powerbook g4 (867MHz / 256MB RAM) I only have one volume so i never ran into the problems you had.

I agree, this is definitely a gamepad game. I have had good luck on the mac with my Logitech Wingman Rumblepad (not the wireless one)

I installed my copy on a secondary volume with no issues. I can't explain why it works for me, sorry! :-)

Cancel that prev. post; I was able to get it going by rebooting. However, the directional buttons don't work and am forced to use the joystick; is this normal?

Gamepad only?

I don't know about THPS 4, but I hit *every* gap in THPS 2 using the keyboard on my PB. After customizing the controls, I actually found the keyboard easier than a gamepad.

Gamepad only?

Did you hit *all* the gaps, unlocking the last secret character, Private Carrera?

I came close to it, also using only the keyboard. I have a save game file on my website if anyone is interested.

FWIW, if you can touch type or play piano, the keyboard makes an excellent interface. If not, you may want to stick with the gamepad.

At least with the demo you don't have to install it on the boot drive. If you place the game folder at the root directory on separate partitions, the demo would boot fine. I would assume the full game behaves the same way. If I put the demo inside my Games folder on a separate partition, crash at startup. Put it at the root directory, I can play.
