The 10.2.8 update has a new .kext for Gigabit Ethernet machines. When you install through Software Update, the internet connection may be lost after reboot. I am using DHCP on cable modem, and can't get any IP address other than a 169.254 self-assigned one. Even using manual settings doesn't work. Most people seeing this problem have said they have the dual processor 450MHz G4. The AppleGMACEthernet.kext driver in /System -> Library -> Extensions has been updated from 1.2.4 to 1.3.0. The 1.3.0 version apparently breaks the onboard ethernet somehow. A user posted instructions on how to replace this with the old version, which fixes the problem. Here are two links with more information:

[robg adds: macosxhints isn't a news site, and as such, I tend to avoid pretending to try to stay current with topical items ... but this one might have bit quite a few people yesterday before Apple pulled the 10.2.8 update. If so, the above links should at least restore functionality until Apple comes out with the revised updaters.]
