Creating aliases from files in different directories

When I teach and consult, I have designers who have folder hierarchies that sometimes go ten levels deep or more. They often spend a great deal of time just organizing their files for easier access. I stumbled upon a nice GUI trick that allows them to search for the files they want and create aliases of those files even though they exist in different directories.
To accomplish this:
- Create a new folder on your desktop
- Use the Search/Find option to locate your files/folders for aliasing
- Select all pertinent items
- Drag the items out of the Search/Find results window over the target folder
- Do NOT let go of the mouse button. Instead, hold down the Command and Option keys, the normal shortcut for creating aliases
- Once the target folder is assured, let go of the mouse button first
You now have a folder of aliases from various locations -- hard disk, server, iPod, Zip, whatever ... all in one location!
This may seem simple to some, but that means that you can impart this information to novices and save both of you time in the future.
