Creating aliases from files in different directories Apps
When I teach and consult, I have designers who have folder hierarchies that sometimes go ten levels deep or more. They often spend a great deal of time just organizing their files for easier access. I stumbled upon a nice GUI trick that allows them to search for the files they want and create aliases of those files even though they exist in different directories. To accomplish this:
  1. Create a new folder on your desktop
  2. Use the Search/Find option to locate your files/folders for aliasing
  3. Select all pertinent items
  4. Drag the items out of the Search/Find results window over the target folder
  5. Do NOT let go of the mouse button. Instead, hold down the Command and Option keys, the normal shortcut for creating aliases
  6. Once the target folder is assured, let go of the mouse button first
You now have a folder of aliases from various locations -- hard disk, server, iPod, Zip, whatever ... all in one location!

This may seem simple to some, but that means that you can impart this information to novices and save both of you time in the future.

If a user would like to keep these as "Favorites", just drag the icon on top of the Favorite icon on the window bar.

That should create an alias that will appear in the Go/Favorites menu

anything you drag onto the favorite icon will become an alias, the favorite folder is different in that from others directories.

Navigating the Finder

For me, navigating through the Finder works best with collumn view in combination with a scroll mouse.
Normally, you have to scroll horizontally a lot in collumn view. This is easy with a scrollwheel, just hold the shift button and presto, the window scrolls horizontally instead of the normal vertical scroll.
Ans the best part is: horizontal scrolling works systemwide with a scrollwheelmouse and the shift key.
