Ambush an offline iChat buddy Apps

You really want to chat with somebody but is consistently offline, away or idle. He seems to go online occasionally, but of course, you have better things to do than watch the Buddy List all the time. So let your computer do the watching.

Get this AppleScript and use it to watch your buddy list, and immediately send a mesage when the user appears.

[robg adds: Ah great, there goes the first 30 seconds of silence I used to get after connecting to iChat :-)]

...or just set an alert in Adium 2 (Alpha) with a trigger of Signed On and an action of Send Message.... *grin*

(anyone following Adium 2 development will know I'm biased :P)

not quite the same- but pretty close. you can (with iChat) right click buddy > get info > Show Actions(from the drop down menu) > then select what you want iChat to do when that specific buddy becmes available. It doesn't look as though it will send a message to them, but it will certainly alert you to their presence in a number of different ways.

Or use a real chat network like ICQ where you can send messages to people even when they are offline. I serioulsy can't understand how people can be satisfied with the crappy iChat client running on the crappy AIM-network. Two negatives does not make one positive. Yeah, right!

Wonderful, now you can send obnoxious canned messages from iChat, too. I guess it's important to keep "feature" parity with Windows.
