Migrating saved Mail structure and data to a new machine
Sep 08, '03 08:42:56AM • Contributed by: Anonymous
When upgrading from my old G4 cube to my new dualie, I wanted to keep all the mail I had organized into folders (in the "On my mac" section of the mailboxes drawer). I found that I could simply drag the folders from Mail.app to the desktop. I zipped them up, uploaded them to my iDisk, set up the new computer, downloaded them, and dragged them to the On my Mac part of the Mail.app mailboxes drawer. So now I have all my old mail on my new computer.

Migrating saved Mail structure and data to a new machine
If you are already using .Mac for the transfer, is it not possible to just turn on IMAP, and have the folder structure duplicated via Mail.app?
Some details are here: http://www.apple.com/switch/howto/mailbox.html Actually, it looks like the the folder structure needs to be duplicated by hand, but the Apple "switch" web pages do have other useful file transation information.

Mail that has been moved out of your .Mac IMAP folders onto your Mac must be copied manually. You'd need to store email on your hard drive if you have more than 10-15MB of mail you are keeping, unless you buy more .Mac email storage.

Or you could just copy the .mbox files file:///Users/UserName/Library/Mail/Mailboxes to the new Mac

I did something along those lines before reformatting my iMac a few weeks ago. Either I made a very subtle goof, or the Finder copy process is flawed, but I ended up losing all the mail that wasn't still in my IMAP (on-server) folders. I was not pleased. Next time I'll be manually dragging the folders from Mail and manually inserting them into the new computer's app.

This hint is really just common sense, and could (should?) have been left off of macosxhints.

I agree... though I'm happy this individual was able to accomplish this "task", it's not really a hint...
Migrating saved Mail structure and data to a new machine
There are several ways you could copy your on-Mac email in order to move it to a new machine. It's not something most people do very often. I, for one, was glad to know that moving my Mail.app mail will be this simple when I decide to upgrade my machine (or if I ever want to completely reconfigure my current one).
Moving Mail Filtering Rules & Junk Rules.
Does anyone know where the Rules for new mail filtering are stored? I would have hoped the simple filtering rules would be in an XML file somewhere that can be moved, and perhaps even edited.

Location of Mail Filtering Rules
The mail filtering rules are indeed in a single file:

A much simpler and more effective way of moving to a new computer would be to simply move you Library folder. All your saved preferences, email, bookmarks, etc. come along with it. And if you use your computer 'properly' (i.e., as a multi-user system, with each user using their own file structure), you could go even further and just copy your entire user folder to the new computer. It would be like putting your hard drive in a faster computer it's so seamless. |
