I just noticed you can perform multiple searches in the Finder at the same time using the Find command.
[robg adds: To make this work, start a search, then switch back from the "search in progress" window to the search defintion window. Create new search criteria and start the new search, and you'll have two searches running simultaneously. Depending on the speed of your machine, you may find that the Finder is somewhat unresponsive while doing this, however!]
