Repair iPod synching on Carbon Copy Cloned machines Apps
Some time ago, I used Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to clone my Cube to my TiBook, so I could have the same OS/software on both machines. This worked great, and I didn't notice any problems at all ... until I bought an iPod. I had the iPod originally "paired" with the Cube, and it worked just peachy. But one day at work I needed to move a 1GB file from one box to another, and I decided to use my iPod as a firewire drive. I hooked the iPod to the TiBook, and as soon as I did, iTunes started, and it auto-sync'd to the iPod, wiping out all the songs on it, since iTunes on the TiBook had no music files.

I talked to my buddy, who has two Macs and and iPod, and he'd never seen that behavior. His iTunes always gave a notice saying that the iPod was already sync'd with a different computer. After poking around, I found out what caused it. In the directory ~/Library -> Preferences -> ByHost, there is supposed to be a file called "com.apple.iTunes.some_string.plist" (where some_string is the machine's Ethernet address in hex). From CCCing the OS, I had two files - one for the Cube's Ethernet address and one for the TiBook. It so happens that the Cube's address is alphanumerically first, and that's what iTunes was picking up.

So when I hooked the iPod to the TiBook, iTunes thought it was connected to the Cube, and since there was no music stored on the TiBook, it wiped the iPod. Deleting the file with the Cube's Ethernet address fixed the issue and made the TiBook's iTunes behave properly.

So can I use this to attach my ipod to multiple machines?

I'm curious if I can use to sync my ipod with multiple machines.. I manage my iPod manually so it wouldn't automatically wipe all the tracks. Will post results soon...

Isn't it generally a bad idea to do something like this? I had thought that there were certain files/configs that were set up for the specific hardware you were running, and so CCC'ing the exact setup of the cube over to a Powerbook could have other subtle, unforeseen problems like this.

I've had no trouble for over three months now, other than the iPod issue. I had a minor problem immediately following the CCCing (the desktop was messed up a bit, and it didn't know it had a battery) but that was fixed by installing the 10.2.6 Combo Update again. Both systems have been rock-solid since.

Nope. An install of OS X is universal, with one caveat: If you're doing a "build" for multiple machines, make sure you create it on the newest hardware you've got-- otherwise, the OS won't "know" about that hardware and include support for it in the install.

Apple has always had applause-worthy backwards compatibility. This trick worked with OS 8.x and OS 9.x as well. At my last job, I ran plenty of beige G3s and even some 8600s and 9600s with a build I had created on a graphite G4. Made my job really easy to only have to maintain a single build for all the Macs I supported.

FWIW, before using CCC, the /System/Library/Caches, /Library/Caches, and ~/Library/Caches folder should be totally wiped. The cache files present in those folders cause numerous problems difficult to track down. There are a bunch of other files, but that is beyond the scope of this hint.

This problem stems from 'ByHost' settings... much info available online

The only time I have found this to not work is when dealing with the server edition of 10. I do not know why for sure, it likely did not help that there was a large difference in the machines (G4 533 to a G4 dual 1.42), but it would not take.
