Navigating to compilation albums in iTunes Apps
Often I will browse through the Artist pane in iTunes and select an artist that appears on a compilation. Clicking on the Artist lists the compilation in the Album pane. Then, clicking on the compilation will show only the songs attributed to that artist in the Song list pane. Most often it will only show one or a few songs.

I may want to then listen to the entire album but that would require having to click on All Albums and then scrolling to the compilation or using the Search feature. I'm lazy though and I'd rather a one (or two) click solution.

First, click on the compilation name in the Album pane. The Album should highlight blue. Next Opton-click the All (xxx Artists) line in the Artists pane. All of the songs will appear in the Song list pane just as if you had clicked the compilation name in the Album pane.

One might argue that it is awkward to have to scroll to the top of the Artists pane but I believe it is easier than having to click on All (xxx) Albums and then remember the name of the compilation and scroll through trying to find the compilation. Search sometimes returns more than just the single album you are looking for.

I have tried to find a way of Applescripting this but have had no luck. I don't want to have to make playlists to achieve the same effect. I'm open to suggestions. I also emailed Apple that they ought to create a contextual menu item that does this automatically. I'll cross my fingers.

Interesting tip. It worked for me without option-clicking. Just click All artists after clicking the compilation name.

What/where is the artist/album pane? Sounds like there's a solution to my biggest frustration with iTunes. Sorry... I'm ignorant.

With the library selected in the left-most column, click on the eye symbol titled 'Browse' in the upper right corner of the iTunes window. VoilĂ , two scrollable lists with all artists and albums appear.

Click on the 'browse' button in the top right window to get the artist/album pane. Note it does not work when viewing a playlist (the button is replaced with a 'burn disc' button).

...but when viewing a playlist, you can use the 'browse' menu item instead. I believe it is under 'View', but I'm at work and can't check right now.

Erm, you do know that clicking on the Genre/Artist/Album header selects the All xxx entry, right? So instead of scrolling up, just click on the Artist header.

BTW, no option-click needed.

If you do a Command+I on one of these compilation songs, there's a check box to turn off the "Compiliation" option altogether.

I thought the way iTunes treated compilations was dumb, so I disabled this a long time back.

Just uncheck the "Part of a Compilation" box and iTunes will offer to take care of the rest.

Now your compilations will be treated like normal albums.

One of the justifications for iTunes "Compilation" support is that it puts the whole album into the Compilations folder in the music library, rather than having 20 different top-level folders, one for each artist.

(What bugs me are people who enter album data on CDDB and consider a single-artist album to be a compilation! Stop that!)

Tell me about it! That is irritating.
