Installing Classic with a non-English OS 9 CD

One of our clients needed a copy of Classic on their XServe (for Cumulus purposes) , but it was impossible to install it. I found out that it had something to do with the Danish version of the Mac OS 9, we were trying to install. Mac OS X server only comes in four languages (English, German, French and Japanese) and Classic must be one of those languages.

I tried everything but to no avail, and at last I came up with a not so obvious solution:

  1. Get the NetBoot (Mac OS 9) CD that comes with the XServe.
  2. Download Pacifist from charlessoft.com.
  3. Run Pacifist, and look inside "NetBoot Installation" for a file called "NetBoot HD.img". Choose this file and click "Extract to."
  4. Activate the disk image and copy "System Folder" to the root of your hard drive.
Once you've done all that, just choose "System Folder" for Classic in System Preferences, and you are all set.
