In the office environment in which I currently work, we've had constant problems with OS X's default permissions. Two of us work on one client's files that are stored on an external FireWire drive that is connected to my machine. Sure, I can create a folder and do a Get Info and change the permissions to read and write, but the problem is whenever I open a file to work on and save it again, it switches the permissions back to the default of read only.
Therefore, if my coworker opens that same file to make changes, he can't save over the original. Given the fact that we work on hundreds of files, you can see how this can get very annoying. I've done endless research in attempt to fix this problem and have come across this script [illusionati.com].
It had to be run on both of our machines, but after it was, any new folder or file created had both read and write abilities for us both. It won't change files created before the install, only new ones. I hope this helps anyone else who may be having these troubles.
[robg adds: I haven't tested this one, but I know this has been a frustration for people who work on shared volumes. Read the web page carefully and make sure you're aware of the limitations prior to running the script.]
