macosxhints and versiontracker searches for Mozilla Firebird Web Browsers
I have made some search plugins for the MacOS X Hints and Versiontracker lovers who use Mozilla Firebird as their default browser. The search plugins enable you to search within Mozilla Firebird by using the search box -- each site appears as a new option in the drop-down menu under the magnifying glass in the search box.

You can download the plugins from the macosxhints' download collection -- Search Plugins (4KB). After downloading and expanding the archive, you can install the extensions by control-clicking on Mozilla Firebird. Select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu, and then navigate to Contents -> MacOS -> searchplugins in the new window. Copy the contents of the downloaded SearchPlugins -> Plugins folder into the searchplugins folder, and launch Mozilla Firebird. You should now have two new search engines in the drop-down menu in the search box.

[robg adds: I tested these, and they work as described, allowing easy searches of both macosxhints and versiontracker.]

Another place to put these?

I am wondering if there is another place that these search files can be put, because by putting them inside the application package, you will have to replace them each time you replace the application, which on a beta can some times be quite often. I usually run nightly builds, so I would lose these each time I replace it, and have to put them back. Anyone know if there is place that is outside of the application that these can be put?

Hmm, I guess there isn't one, since when you install plug ins from Mozilla they are all put in the package. Kind of a pain in the ass actually. Hmmm. That should be changed, you should be able to put them within your profile.

You can do this easily from the address line in any of the Mozilla family of browsers by making a new bookmark as such:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%s%20site:macosxhints.com
or
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%s%20versiontracker.com

Then just give it a one letter keyword, I use "m" for macosxhints.com and "v" for versiontracker. "?" is my default google search, and I also use "d" for searching dictionary.com, and "p" to search google's phonebook. No drop down selections or anything, and you fingers never leave the keyboard.

cmd-L to get to the address bar, then:
m safari
searches the macosxhints.com site for anything pertaining to Safari.

These type of bookmarks are also guaranteed to work for future Mozilla upgrades, whereas add-in scripts and proggies are not.
